It has been a while now since the iPhone started to dominate the smart phone world. Clearly the folks at Apple have done their homework on designing a device that has spurned countless attempts to duplicate the experience it offers. Recently Apple announced the iPhone 4 in their typical theatrical way. While the iPhone 4 is certainly an impressive piece of technology, just as the first iPhone was, the unit does have a few glaring omissions. Granted, some of the omissions are a tad on the picky side, but really Apple could gone a few more steps in developing the iPhone 4.
With the Droid X likely to have a monster 4.3″ screen size, the iPhone 4 measures in at 3.5″ according to Apple.com. That means more than an inch of screen size difference between the two, should the Droid X actually come in at that size. This may seem like a nit picky complaint, but the new iPhone has the same screen size as the old 3GS. The new display may be technically superior to the Droid X, but it could have been a little larger as well.
Mobile Hot Spot
With all the rage in smart phones doing just about everything, being able to use a phone like the Evo 4G, and likely the Droid X, as mobile hot spots for a variety of Wi-Fi enabled devices is an extremely handy feature, but for some reason the folks at Apple chose to overlook packing that asset into the iPhone 4. Perhaps an app or download can cure this problem, only the future will tell for sure.
For a phone as sophisticated as the iPhone not to have a built in HDMI port is very disappointing. Of course the main competitor of the iPhone is likely the Droid X, and of course it has and HDMI out port. However, the mobile dock that is going to available for the iPhone will sport and HDMI port, but that seems like Apple trying to create another revenue center for themselves.
While the iPhone will be available in 16GB and 32GB varieties, which is very nice, for a device that is built around apps and pictures, a 64GB model would have been nice. Heck even tossing in an expansion port may have been a slick little addition, but alas iPhone 4 customers will have to make do.
Hey, the iPhone 4 is a very nice phone, and will likely be extremely popular. Still, with the Droid X having a street date sometime in July, it remains to be seen if any customers will jump ship and change brands. The one thing about Apple is that their customers and fans tend to skew toward the loyal side. If the iPhone 4 had a bigger screen we could see them all.
