Isn’t it nice to have more than one bathroom? You don’t have to step over kids’ messes to take care of your own business and you can get to your bathroom any time you want without having to wait on a child to finish. If you have a bathroom which is mostly used by kids you probably have it decorated with a child’s theme. Even if you don’t you can create a child’s theme by using ordinary bars of soap. The soap can be easily turned into cute characters that not only look adorable but serve as air fresheners as well. The simple decor can be made for holidays or just everyday usage.
The perfect bar of soap to use is one which is rectangular and has squared corners. Soaps which have rounded corners will not work. In addition, the soap must be the type that is very thick and not thin soaps that are often found in hotel bathrooms. Thick soaps can stand on their own and that’s what you need when it comes to making bathroom characters for kids. Use white soap to make nearly any character or choose colored soaps for specific characters. For example, use a green bar of soap to make a frog character. Remove the chosen bar of soap from the wrapper and you’re ready to start crafting.
The characters you make can be bunnies, puppies, teddy bears or other pets. Or, they can be unknown characters with strange characteristics and features. This is a craft that kids will enjoy making or that an adult can have lots of fun doing. Start by making a face on the soap. You can glue on wiggly eyes from a craft store or you can draw the eyes on with a paint marker. Eyes can be made from fake jewels or even from buttons. You can even stick two decorative tacks or straight pins into the soap to make eyes.
Make muzzles or noses from small pom-poms. Or, cut them from pieces of flat craft foam. A nose can also be made from a button, a bead or even a lid from a tiny bottle. Mouths can be made from string, yarn, toothpicks, foam or even markers. Whiskers can be made from pieces of twine, wire, foam or string. Ears for the characters can be made from felt, foam, paper or pom-poms. You can make hair for the character by using doll hair, yarn, twine, cotton balls or similar items.
Make a different type of character by using a Styrofoam ball to make a separate head. With the above technique, you make the soap into the body as well as the head; with the Styrofoam ball, the soap becomes the body and the ball becomes the head. Stick a toothpick into the top region of the soap, as it stands on one of its short sides, then stick the opposite end of the toothpick into the ball. Now you can decorate the head as you want.
If you want a character to be a certain color, like brown, but you only have white soap, there are some techniques you can use to change the appearance of the soap. For example, cover the soap with glue and stick pieces of yarn all over it. Or, glue on tiny pom-poms to make the coat of an animal. You can even wrap the soap with thin cloth of zebra stripes or other designs. The Styrofoam ball can be painted to match the color of the yarn or other material or you can even decorate the ball with the same materials you use for the soap. You can also paint most soaps by using tempera paints. Most paints which are suitable for plastics will work well to paint the bars of soap to create just the character you want.
Set the finished characters around the bathroom to create a theme but set them in places where they aren’t likely to get wet. They can be used to decorate window sills, counter tops and bathroom shelves. As a matter of fact, you can even use the characters as decor pieces around the house. They look great and make any area of the house smell fantastic. Set them on children’s night stands, a mantle, an end table or other areas. Make ones with holiday themes or just ones you can use any day of the week. Make some to give to friends or just make them and keep them all for yourself!
