It won’t be Robert or Kent who get the boot tonight on ‘So You Think You Can Dance.’
They’ve already become the darlings of the judges on SYTYCD, which aired June 16th and was the first night viewers were allowed to call in their votes. Tonight one of the dancers will be eliminated.
Judge Nigel Lythgoe compared Kent Boyd to “a young Paul Newman.” Boyd, dressed in black pants and white shirt looked excited and had fun during his performance, while keeping it classy. He made a misstep at some point, and for that Lythgoe invoked the name of Jessica Rabbit, but Mia Michaels forgave the small-town boy for the awkward moment and said he looked like a ballroom boy, which I assume was a compliment.
While Boyd has a wholesome, fresh look, Robert Roldan, who once dreamt of being a professional baseball player, danced with sexy animal instinct. “No one really knows you yet,” Lythgoe said afterwards. “You are going to be so good, young man.”
Roldan gave a glimpse of what might be in store for us all by hamming it up in front of the camera, and exchanging sexy growls with Michaels-although she was the one who started it, Roldan gladly reciprocated.
Lythogoe, Micahels and Adam Shankman cautioned some dancers to fill in the steps, both creatively and emotionally.
Lythgoe told Billy Bell, who danced first, that it was important for him to establish chemistry with his dance partner quickly, but on the bright side, Michaels told Bell he once danced like a boy but was now dancing like a man.
Apparently Ade`Chike` Torbert will need to improve his performance if he is to stay on the show. Torbert and his all-star dance partner did a routine with a desk and rolling chair to the tune of “Addicted to Love,” but Lythgoe didn’t think Torbert was addicted to anything. “I didn’t quite believe this was your fantasy,” Lythgoe said. I really don’t believe you wanted her as much as she was giving you.”
Melinda Sullivan also received less than glowing critiques for her performance. Michaels actually compared her to a box of corn flakes and told Sullivan “you came across as pigeon-toed,” which was not a sexy look. Shankman softened the blow by saying Sullivan was a good actor and a good performer.
All the dancers obviously worked hard to get on the show, but Lauren Froderman needs to work harder, according to Michaels. “It felt like the first draft of a performance,” she told Froderman, while Lythgoe flat out said she needed to improve. Froderman thanked the judges for their comments, but Shankman was concerned that she was thanking them. “I want you to look deeper into who you are,” he said. “It’s going to be your performance that will get you through.”
But the road will end for at least one dancer tonight when viewer votes from the June 16th episode have been tallied. Check back here for more news. SYTYCD airs live tonight on Fox 9 – 10 pm ET/PT tape-delayed.
