Knight And Day was released into theaters for a special sneak peek Saturday. Perhaps this is part of an effort to get some early word of mouth out for it before the official opening weekend. Most likely they would love to get a lot of Internet blurbs telling folks how it is the “perfect date movie.” So, is it?
Knight And Day stars Hollywood superstars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and was directed by “3:10 To Yuma” director James Mangold. The story follows a woman as she comes into contact with a spy that has either gone rouge or is actually trying to protect a priceless scientific creation. Of course when the sparks start flying from bullets, the sparks of romance start flying between herself and her savior; or captor, whichever he may turn out to be.
Knight And Day is an action rom-com, or action packed romantic comedy. At times when watching certain sequences it almost felt like I was watching an older movie. Sometimes the special effects on the action scenes just felt somewhat like 90’s Hollywood, which actually wasn’t a bad thing; brought back a sense of nostalgia, but don’t look to be impressed by realism.
This movie is fun from beginning to end, though I was indeed ready for it to be over by the ending. The reason for that feeling was because although “fun” it also felt like it was too safe sometimes. It was definitely a formula style movie, and yes a fun formula, maybe as a writer watching it though I felt like the dialog could have used something more. There is so much over-the-top action that there could have been maybe a dash more wit to match. Then again it still plays well with the physical comedy lead ins to situations as well, just sometimes too “safe formula” feeling. Examples: There is a shootout and the Cruise character tells the Diaz character to run on three for new cover as he gives cover fire. She runs too early and gets shot at before running back. You’ve probably seen that moment in the trailer and you’ve probably felt like you’ve seen that moment in a lot of other movies. Also there is some time jump sort of cheating going on when Cameron Diaz’ character is put to sleep and apparently a lot of stuff happens between that moment she goes to sleep and then wakes up; of which you only get glimpses. This is all part of a gag the filmmakers are pulling off, but it is the sort of gag that is funny at first, but then the more you think of it the more lazy it actually felt. She goes to sleep several times.
Supporting actors were not given their time to shine at all. Paul Dano is also in the movie as a minor character that could have used more attention. He seems like he is an interesting character in that he is a bit eccentric and created the scientific thing that everyone in the movie is after, however, he is not given any truly grand lines or moments at all. Could have dropped Paul Dano out and thrown in Joe-Blow Nobody. I like Paul Dano as an actor, I wanted him to get more. Viola Davis is an actress that received loads of acclaim for her role in “Doubt,” yet in Knight And Day she is merely an FBI boss with no great moments or lines, sparsely used. The villains are never around long enough to make any sort of real impact either. Peter Sarsgaard is a great actor and could have really put in a performance, but no real chance for him to do such. He just rides around in a car or stands in scenes a few times. Likewise for recognizable actor Jordi Molla, who plays the other bad guy. If you need an example of his work check him out as the drug kingpin in Bad Boys 2, this guy could have been used more in Knight And Day as well. The “fun” and headline stars drown them all out. Fans of the television show “Lost” may recognize actress Maggie Grace also taking on a pointless role.
Even without the top notch special effects the action “set pieces” of the movie are made entertaining and explosive.
Knight and Day is indeed the perfect date movie as long as both dates like action. The romance is mostly light banter during set pieces with no epic moment to make it more romance than action, so if girls don’t think Tom Cruise is hot stuff with his shirt off, they may feel more cheated when their man gets to see Cameron Diaz in her bikini. Not that all men are attracted to her though, but it is fairly undeniable that her body looks good in a bikini. Of course not all couples going to see Knight And Day will potentially be boy and girl couples, but I think the movie would still hold some appeal and provide the same fun for girl with girl and boy with boy couples as well. Great product.
