I own a successful small business located in Houston, Texas. I am a freelance writer who works primarily on the Internet writing articles and posts with an eye toward search engine optimization. I also ghost write non fiction books, write press releases and consult on advertising campaigns. Although my background and education is in finance, writing has always been something I enjoyed. I also historically preferred working for a small company or for myself as opposed to a large corporation. I have started a few businesses that I either dropped or sold throughout my lifetime. This business, however, has been the most successful and longest lasting.
There are three main reasons I believe I am successful with this small business. Any other venture I have started throughout the years had something lacking. The three components that came together perfectly were a love of what I do, organization and hard work. I have been accused of being a workaholic a time or two. This is not always a positive trait, especially when it comes to relationships but I do think it contributes greatly to my success as a small business owner. I work every day for at least a short time. I do not have weekends or vacations where I do not even check in. This allows me to keep a finger on the pulse of my business.
My organization process is what allows me to remain on track. I work smarter not harder. I have a schedule that I keep with me at all times. I write down tasks and coordinate set times for particular projects. I use technology to keep my finances, projects, employee information and advertising in order. I also remain on top of emerging technology so I can streamline processes and make anything I do as efficient as possible. I do not waste time on tasks that can be automated.
But really, hard work and efficiency are textbook recommendations for successful small businesses. What sets this business apart from the rest and what I think is the primary reason for turning this into a successful small business is my love for what I do. I enjoy my work immensely. Because of this I am always motivated. When I wake up in the morning I can not wait to start work. I have work on my mind all the time and often find ideas in daily life because of it.
As an owner of a successful small business I have many advantages. Although I work harder as a small business owner than I ever did for anyone else there is a sense of pride and in actuality I can work when I choose to. This flexibility is a nice benefit. I have the ability to employ others as well and have given people opportunities that they may not have otherwise had. Just as I can be flexible in my time, I can allow my employees the same. I have the satisfaction of knowing that my successes, especially the financial ones, are based on my efforts. The fruits of my labor are not going into someone else’s pocket.
As a successful small business owner I have been asked what advice I would give to someone who wanted to open a business. The first piece of advice is to find something you enjoy doing. Then, plan and organize so that your business model is as efficient as possible. Finally, make sure you have no illusions that being a small business owner is easy. Work hard at something you love and be efficient in your processes and you have a great opportunity of being successful.
