Is it a bird? No.
Is it a plane? No.
Is it Superman? No.
Then what is it?
It is Billy Purta and he is coming to your state.
Purta is a 23-year-old skydiver attempting to skydive in all 50 states before his 25th birthday arrives in 2012.
He started chasing his dream two years ago in his home state of California.
After that jump he decided to try and do the rest of the states in alphabetical order, so he made a trip to Alabama and did a jump.
With money being the biggest obstacle blocking the road to his goal, Purta decided that alphabetical order may not be the economical way to go.
In a quest to find ways to save money, Purta visited couchsurfing.org, a website that connects travelers with free couches to stay on.
“I’m saving an immeasurable amount of money by using the website www.couchsurfing.org to find places to stay for free along the way,” said Purta. “On my almost five month trip I didn’t have to pay for a place to sleep one time.”
Besides saving money, Purta is attempting to drum up donations
on his website
Here fans can view pictures, make donations and check into sending Purta an object such as a stuffed animal to jump with.
“I just opened up the option to donate via Paypal on my blog,” said Purta. “After the first trip, I need the help. If anybody wants me to do something personal for them, they’re welcome to send me an object such as a stuffed animal or silly outfit along with $50 and I will jump with it, then send it back along with putting up pictures and a video of the jump on my blog.”
Purta has 30 states left to do and just over two years to do them.
States that he has already jumped in includes Arkansas where he celebrated his 100th jump by skydiving naked.
Purta writes on his blog, “I would seriously recommend that you should skydive naked. It is awesome.”
His jump in New Mexico ranks as one of his coldest jumps and he reports meeting cool bartenders in Baton Rouge, La.
Purta says his Oklahoma jump was “quite the adventure” as he landed in someone’s back yard.
Following his landing in Kansas he was soaked by what he calls “insane rains.”
He describes Colorado as one of the most beautiful dives he has done and Oregon ranks up there to.
This month Purta plans to visit Nevada and Alaska.
So if you have an interest in skydiving, or if you failed to achieve one of your life’s goal and want to help someone chase their’s go to Purta’s site and send him a note of encouragement, offer him a couch or make a donation.
You never know he might just land in your back yard next.
