Fan funding, also known as crowdfunding, is a unique way for independent microbudget filmmakers to fund their films. Filmmakers rally the support of fans before the film is shot. “Black Lotus” filmmakers explain why their film project is worth the financial commitment of loyal fans of the epic fantasy genre.
The $4m feature film is called Black Lotus. The preceding short film, which will demonstrate the shooting style, visuals and dramatic content, is called Legend of Black Lotus. The short film will be shot for a budget of under $10,000. To pull it off, the filmmakers need approximately 200 fans to donate $50 or more. Steep? In this economy, perhaps. However the filmmakers are fully aware of film fandom and of the loyalty of fans. They hope to tap into that energy and financial reserve. Here is a list of six reasons why fans of epic fantasy films should support the making of the film.
1- Not since the Lord of the Rings trilogy has an epic fantasy film stood poised to ignite heartfelt fandom. While adhering tightly to the wide breath of the epic fantasy genre, Legend of Black Lotus has something for everyone. A mashup of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Hero and House of Flying Daggers, Legend of Black Lotus employs a dramatic epic storytelling philosophy. The story and characters are rich in emotion and drama yet grounded in simplicity. There’s good versus evil, sanity versus insanity, love versus hatred, and jealousy versus adoration.
2 – ACTION is the glue that stimulates, entices and frightens. Fans attend films for different individual reasons, but the unifying reason is entertainment. We want our hearts to melt, our pulse to pound, our eyes to widen in disbelief and our hopes to soar. Films obtain this from us with action. As an epic fantasy martial arts film, Legend of Black Lotus uses action as the glue the binds the drama, romance, and conflict.
3 – Experience means everything. The writer/director behind Legend of Black Lotus, Angelo Bell, has worked independently as a filmmaker for over a decade. In true on-the-job-training format, Angelo learned all about filmmaking from actually doing it. Angelo has won best-in-festival awards for two films he produced, and a best director award for a film her wrote and directed. Even with today’s technology it often takes filmmakers eighteen months of more to complete a film. In ten years Angelo has completed over thirteen film projects.
4 – Passion counts for success. The only thing standing in the way of a director and completing his film is passion. Intense passion shepherds filmmakers through the trials and tribulations that invariably come during indie filmmaking. Many film projects produce challenges that deny their completion. Writer/director Angelo Bell has completed every project he’s ever started.
5 – The strength of epic fantasy comes from the world/realm wherein the story takes place. This is often called the lore or mythology. Fantasy worlds must possess rules, science and laws just as our real world does. The laws must be absolute and unchanging. Years went into the conception, development and creation of the world of Black Lotus. The link between nature and people, the higher power, and the limitations or the supernatural talents of man. The world is blessed by the reality of Ancient China life juxtaposed against the surreal world of talking forests, awakening spirits and magical births. Visual concepts have been perfected. The super-natural elements of House of Flying Daggers comes to mind. This is a world with arrows change trajectory in mid-flight, powerful warriors seem to temporarily suspend the laws of gravity, and prayers are answered.
6 – A true ground-floor opportunity for epic fantasy and martial-arts film fans. During the making of two films, Lord of the Rings and Ninja Assassin fans from all over the world chatted, tweeted and discussed the films on forums and social media sites. However, their involvement in the films was limited to hands off discussion. Not one of the fans could truthfully say they had a hand in the making of the film. With Legend of Black Lotus, fans who help fund the short film have legitimate bragging rights. They are an intrinsic element to the development, production and success of the feature film. There aren’t any Hollywood films that include the fans from the start. If you want to literally see your name on the big screen, fan funding is the quickest and easiest way to do make it happen.
