Dogs leap up to greet their masters with the same enthusiasm as they chase squirrels. They are loyal and faithful and want to spend time with you. Dogs bark when there is danger or when the wind blows or if they see or hear something that catches their attention-though their attention is often short and a bark may precede a bite. The dogs in our lives make us laugh and cry, protect us and entertain us and therefore perhaps they can also teach us. On this National Take a Dog to Work Day consider the following dog quotes and phrases and apply them if only for a day in your business.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #1: Woof, Woof, Bow-Wow
This is not an actual quote but there is so much to be gained from this dog phrase. “Woof, Woof” means speak up when you see a problem, identify a wayward strategy, notice a problem with the toilet (hopefully not while drinking from it) or see someone in trouble. “Bow” means take the humble approach not the credit and “Wow” means be amazed at the transformation and changes that will follow that will be for the better.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #2: Some days you’re the dog; some days you’re the hydrant. Unknown
Funny thing is that some days you may not know which one you are, the dog or the hydrant. On those days it is helpful to remember who the “Top Dog” is and who is the “Mutt”. If you are the “Top Dog” remember that the “Mutt” brings variety, experience and get it done qualities to the business and you need to appreciate their contributions. If you are the “Mutt” try to avoid being the hydrant by providing insights and looking for opportunities to better yourself and your company. Do not let your problems limit you and strive to live up to your potential.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #3: How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg. Abraham Lincoln
This is a pretty straightforward business strategy-be honest. Be honest with your associates, your customers and your rivals. Yes, you can growl at your enemies but you better have the teeth to back it up; otherwise you will be retreating with your tail between your legs.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #4: Well-washed and well-combed domestic pets grow dull; they miss the stimulus of fleas. Francis Galton
Even if you love your job there will come a day when your motivation to get there will be low. This is when you need to introduce the fleas. Come up with a challenge to get you scratching the itch of enthusiasm and of a job well done. Find a niche within your business that bugs you and come up with a practical presentation to address this itch, just don’t scratch in the wrong places at the wrong time.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #5: A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. Robert Benchley
This is an extremely important business strategy. Be loyal to your fans and customers, without them your business is finished. Persevere in providing quality products and service and being a company or business built on integrity. Value employees who when presented with a task will work at that task or project until it is done correctly.
When you face problems or a business disaster take a three sided approach before giving up or resting. Depending on the problem you may not want to ever give up, so rest and try again. What is the three sided approach? Look at the problem from the top, the bottom and from every direction possible before making a final assessment or decision.
Dog to Work Business Strategy #6: Even Crippled Dogs Will Chase the Squirrels
Regardless of whether you are an employee or an employer you have dreams, ideas and hopes for your life and for those you care about. While we also have obligations and have to do things within our daily life to maintain our lifestyles sometimes the only thing holding us back from pursuing our dreams is fear.
Consider this question, “If you are on the leash of fear, can you reach your squirrels?”
It might also be helpful to consider that if you catch your squirrel-what then? Once you catch the squirrel, will you let it go and try again or maybe, you would rather be chasing a butterfly or trying for something bigger. Don’t look now -oh, go ahead and look- there’s a squirrel running circles around your cubicle.
Remember every dog has his day.
