Siobhan Magnus, the quirky, tattooed glassblower from Cape Cod, was voted off American Idol Wednesday night. And because anybody with a pair of working ears ought to recognize that she is an amazing talent who can sing circles around the five remaining finalists (plus, she scored well with the judges after her Tuesday night “pimp spot” performance of Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine”), the question is, Why was Siobhan Magnus – one of the competition’s early front-runners – voted off American Idol prematurely? I was convinced that, at the very least, she would make it into the top 3. What happened?
I’m usually not one to embrace conspiracy theories, but I can’t help thinking that Simon Cowell and Kara DioGuardi, who for the past several weeks have been particularly – indeed gratuitously – critical of Siobhan’s performances, might have an agenda, and were thus trying to influence the voting. Could it be that they were trying to drive voters away from Siobhan so that Crystal Bowersox, their pick to go all the way, wouldn’t have to go up against Siobhan (stiff competition indeed) in the finale? I’m just sayin’!
But maybe there are other, less conspiratorial reasons for Siobhan Magnus’ early ouster. I believe some fans may have abandoned her because her performances were becoming too generic; they felt she was losing sight of her artistic identity. And I believe some may have been turned off by her defensiveness when being criticized by the judges. And others no doubt grew tired of all the glory notes (which she was often unable to sustain) she was incorporating into nearly every performance. Some feel her singing in the lower register is too nasally (I think that’s rubbish – her lower register voice is beautiful). Or, finally, perhaps Siobhan Magnus is just too strange for Idol voters?
We will never know for sure why Siobhan Magnus did not advance past the top 6. But it does not necessarily bode ill for Siobhan that she will not be the next American Idol – or even the runner up. After all, Jennifer Hudson, who won an Oscar and whose career is going well, thank you very much, finished 7th when she was on Idol. And the hugely popular Chris Daughtry, who competed on the fifth season of Idol, finished in 4th place.
So, despite the fact that Siobhan finished in 6th place, it is entirely within the realm of possibility that she will go on to have a successful career as a recording artist and performer.
