There is no feeling, except the extremes of fear and grief, that does not find relief in music. George Elliot The Mill on the Floss 1860
In the time before the advent of the computer, the cell phone, and the ipod; those of us born in the baby boomer generation listened to music on a device from ancient antiquity called the record player. Some called it the hi – fi with phonograph records.
Vinyl discs call 45’s and lp’s running at speeds of 33 1/3 revolutions per minute or 45 revolutions per minute entertained us with our favorite songs. When the needle was placed at the beginning of the record, the music started to play.
On occasion, when we had listened to our favorite songs to the point of wearing out the record, the needle would get stuck in a groove and the same line would repeat over and over and over. Our favorite Beatles’ tune I wanna hold your hand may have been heard to say, “I wanna hold, I wanna hold, I wanna hold, I wanna hold”. Aretha Franklin’s R – E – S – P – E – C – T would have been heard, “R – E – S – P, R – E – S – P, R – E – S – P”.
Sometimes in the process of our healing, our emotional needles get stuck playing old tunes from our negative and painful pasts. All the voices we have heard that told us we were no good, and we would never amount to anything, or we are just like our no good mothers and fathers want air time to play in our heads over and over again. If we are not careful, we find ourselves believing the lies they tell.
We are not what others have said about us. We are not the sum total of our frequent failures and disappointing experiences. We are more.
When we decide to heal, we take the valuable information from our past experiences and use it to design the futures we want to build. When we decide to heal, we have to protect our interests and investments in ourselves. Remember, there is no turning back.
Here is a law that we all need to remember to achieve the success we seek in our futures. No two things can occupy the same space at the same time.
When you become aware your old tapes are playing on auto pilot without your permission, it will be time for you to put on some new music. It is time to hear some new messages. It is time for constructive self – talk.
Say out loud, “Healing is a process. I claim it for myself. As a result of what I am learning about health and healing, I am growing stronger and stronger every day. My mind and my body are healing. I think healing. I act healing. With help from beyond myself, I am certain my healing will be complete”.
What do you do when your needle gets stuck?
What negative old messages try to play themselves over and over again in your mind?
Are you tempted to believe what they are saying?
What do you do to over power their influence?
What positive affirmations new messages are you using to encourage yourself?
Are you determined you will see your healing through until it comes?
