The silhouette is a fun and whimsical way of adding a personal touch to your living space. These fun silhouette switch plate covers take very little effort or expense to create and are quite fun!
For this project, you will need:
– A brand new white switch plate cover
– Patterned scrapbook paper or wrapping paper of your choice
– Digital camera
– Willing subject to have their photo taken
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Spray Paint in Gloss Black
– Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray
– Sponge brush
– Mod Podge or other decoupage medium
– Craft knife
– Self healing mat
– Newspaper or a large drop cloth
To begin, cover the area in which you will be working with a few layers of old newspaper or a large fabric drop cloth. Use a ruler and pencil to create a rectangle on the sheet of patterned scrapbook paper or wrapping paper. Carefully using a craft knife to cut out the shape from the paper. With the same craft knife, create diagonal slits at the corners of the rectangle. (This will allow the paper to lay flat over the switch plate cover.) Also, cut out a center rectangle to allow for the switch to come through when installed on the wall.
With a sponge brush, apply a generous amount of Mod Podge or other decoupage medium to the back of the paper. Carefully adhere the paper piece to the switch plate cover, smoothing with your fingers to prevent any wrinkling. Let the project dry for two to three hours before proceeding. (This is the perfect amount of time to get your silhouette piece done.)
Using a digital camera, take a silhouette or side shot photo of your willing subject. Print the photo out on cardstock. With a craft knife and self healing mat, very carefully cut out the face from the photo leaving absolutely zero background. Spray the piece with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black and let it dry for about an hour.
Apply Mod Podge to the back of the silhouette piece. Attach the black silhouette to the paper covered switch plate cover. Smooth the design and dry for a few hours. Spray the project with three to four coats of Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Finishing Spray and dry overnight before installing.
Consider using bright and bold colors or patterns for the basic background. This way the black silhouette “pops” against the brightness of what is behind it.
