To hear such a controversial rapper speak in such an open and honest way was simply amazing. Eminem has a history of speaking his mind, many a people find his rap lyrics and attitude less than desirable. However, recently the young hip-hop artist spoke very candidly about his battle with addiction, “I was going to die.” Eminem told CNN’s ShowBiz Tonight’s Brook Anderson in a heartfelt interview.
It was an extremely powerful moment, anytime you have an influential celebrity speak in a positive manner it can make a world of difference to listeners; and with rappers that means many a teens. As one can imagine the life-style of the famous icons that we tend to idolize is often a complex one. There is a certain image that most young rap artist feel that they must live up to as Eminem openly admitted. He said that there is a feeling that one has to be strong, and admitting you need help with an addiction shows weakness; he learned how untrue that is.
Unfortunately, struggling with an addiction is not just a battle with the urges to take one more pill or have that next drink it is also an inner fight against the voices inside that say, “You must be weak if you can’t handle this on your own.”
Eminem openly admitted he had went into rehab some years ago and didn’t take it seriously because he wasn’t doing it for himself; he was simply going through the steps if you will. However, he made an interesting statement, basically Eminem said after nearly dying and relapsing he reached a point where he realized that he needed help, but he had to do it for himself. Brook Anderson’s interview with Eminem on CNN’s ShowBiz Tonight was extremely powerful.
That was such a big step and a sign of pure strength. Kudos to you Eminem. He looked really good and what stood out was his eyes, they looked healthier than before; at least to me. Hopefully, there will be many a teens and adults that will gain the courage needed to do what Eminem did. Surrender and ask for help overcoming whatever addiction they may be struggling with.
Goes to show you that rappers and hip-hop artist are not bad people. They are performers who come from a world you may not be familiar with, and in many situations they can and have been a very positive influence on others. Eminem, as with any other person recovering from an addiction, has a day to day up hill battle to stay drug free, let’s pray for him so that he never faces another day where he has to utter the words, “I was going to die.”
