Should I Buy a Changing Table for My Baby?

by itchyfish

Are you wondering if a changing table is necessary? Are you debating if you should purchase one? You’ve bought the crib, car seat, stroller and even a bouncy seat. Now you’re debating if it’s time to buy a diaper changing table. Is it a necessity or just an expensive luxury? Should you spend some extra money on a changing table?

If you’re wondering this, you’re not alone. In fact, some commonly searched terms on Yahoo and Google are “changing table necessary” and “should I buy a changing table”.

To answer the question, no, a changing table is not a necessity. There are thousands of moms who go without one, and of course, many babies years ago did not have a changing table. You can definitely survive the babyhood stage without a changing table.

If you have a dresser, one idea is to simply buy a changing table mattress and set it on top. You can then turn the dresser into a “changing table” and fill the top drawer with the diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream. It is just as effective as an expensive changing table.

However, if you do not have an adequate dresser, you can still make do without a changing table. You can always change the baby on the floor, if it is carpeted. All you have to do is lay a towel or blanket on the ground, have diapers/wipes ready, and voila!- you’ve got a great changing area. If you have hardwood or tile floors, you can lay the baby on a bed. You can also buy a padded transportable diaper pad to lay on the floor.

If money is tight, you definitely do not need to spend the extra cash on a diaper changing table. Your baby will be just fine having diapers changed on a bed or the floor. However, if you can afford it, or if you are blessed to be having a baby shower and can register for one, it can come in handy. Diaper changing tables can make it very convenient to keep all of your diaper supplies together, and can be more sanitary.

Diaper changing tables do take up room, so if space is limited, go without one. Your baby would prefer to have some extra crawling space over a diaper changing table.

In conclusion, while a diaper changing table is a nice luxury, it is definitely not a necessity. It is not absolutely necessary to have a changing table for your baby.
