The Shawnee Mission Park in Shawnee, KS, a suburb of Kansas City is sponsoring a wonderful event for family and friends. It is called the Great American Family Campout. The park is located at 7900 Renner Rd., Shawnee, KS. There are two separate time frames to choose from: Saturday/Sunday – June 26 and June 27 or Saturday/Sunday – July 31 and August 1. There is no need to feel intimidated if you lack camping skills as it is geared for novices as well as the hard-core campers. It’s all about having fun.
Event Price is as follows: $20 for adults; $15 for children; free for 3 and under
That price will include the sleepover under the stars at Shawnee Mission Park, admittance to a play production in the outdoor theater, walking on the trails, fun at the beach and marina passes for the paddleboats.

By your participation in this camp you will also be benefiting a worthwhile endeavor. 2010 marks the 41st anniversary of the Johnson County Recreation District’s support of New Horizon Summer Camp. This camp is specifically geared to serving the county’s special needs community for those between 6-18 years of age. So while you’re having heaps of fun, you can feel good that you are helping others as well in a worthwhile cause.

Campout schedule is as follows: (the same for both sets of dates)
2-6 p.m. Campsite set-up
Access to the beach, marina for paddleboat, trail walk, fishing and family time
Although the Saturday evening meal is not included, there are community grills available on the premises. So bring those hotdogs and hamburgers with all the fixings.
7:15 p.m. – Early entrance to theatrical performance
8:30 p.m. – Play begins
11:30 p.m. – Quiet time and bed time
7:00 a.m. – Juice and donuts will be provided free for your breakfast dining pleasure
9:30 a.m. Clean up and taking down of camp sites
10:00 – The event ends
The marina and beach passes are good for the rest of the day.
What You Need to Bring to the Campout:
Bring your own camp gear such as tent, sleeping bags, and whatever else you think you might need to make this a very special time. Don’t forget the camera as you’re sure to want to capture some of these memories.
A Campout Packet will be available for you to pick up when a date has been determined. You can go between 3-6 p.m. at the Antioch Park in Bldg. B on the day of the event. If you don’t want to make an extra trip you may opt instead to retrieve it at the start of the campout itself.
