Space exploration has always been used as a political means. It was done in the 1960s when United States and the Soviet Union had a race to the moon. Right now, I do not believe that the United States should be focused on going to Mars for some pretty obvious reasons.
The United States economy is still in a period of economic downturn. The media and officials keep telling us that everything is getting better, but the fact is that job growth has still not begun. Every day in the newspaper, I read about school budget meetings which are slashing teaching positions and extra-curricular programs. I can’t believe that all the opportunities that I had during my education will not be there for this generation. And I only graduated eight years ago. During my time in college, and now working in that environment, I have already seen how poorly the public school system educates children. If the school districts cut any more things, I would say that these children aren’t even going to have a chance at a college degree without some real great intervention and dedication.
Another problem with employment is that most companies only give part-time work. This means a person has to work two or three jobs to make a decent living. If President Obama wanted to help out real workers, he would make more corporations dole out full-time positions some of the hard workers at the bottom of the totem pole. Then these people could work one job and receive benefits. It would help out greatly.
There are so many more things that President Obama needs to be focusing on right now. I can understand that as the first black president, he wants to set the bar high, but people no longer have the fervor they did for space exploration. Mars is a far away rock and people are worried about how they are going to put food on the table. He should not be worried about other planets when we cannot even take care of our own. We are on the verge of ruining the earth if we do not take some steps to stop global warming. He should be focusing on clean energies, like he said he was going to do in his campaign. He should be working on campaigns to fight pollution and solve garbage waste problems.
There are so many little things that a president could do to help out the people of his country. They don’t have to always be monumental. I would like to see a president who really focused on the people and really focused on world peace as a means to solve conflict. Going to Mars right now seems like a ridiculous notion considering all of the problems we are currently facing. If President Obama wastes taxpayer money on this mission, I can definitely see him out of the White House in 2012.
