Security Objective Components
Throughout I will give a basic explanation regarding what security measures I would have implemented into violent scenarios where churches along with its followers had fell victim to the violent attacks of individuals who shot, burned and planted devastating bombs that had taking the lives of many and ruined the lives of those who survived. In addition, I will explain the four basic principles to the most widely used security design known as the “Seamless, Integrated Security design. The personnel security, physical security, information security and interdepartmental dependencies security will be covered.
I believe the component that deserves the most attention overall in the listed environment’s would be that of the physical security feature. The components that I consider less pertinent for these particular environments during a vulnerability assessment would be personnel security, information security, and interdepartmental dependencies. My reasoning for removing personnel security from the list is due to the minimal likelihood events like these would occur on a regular basis and pose a risk. Hiring security personnel or a law enforcement officer to monitor-guard a church during service is unrealistic and extremely cost-effective. Moreover, churches maintain the majority of their order of operation with the assistance of donations from members of the church and normally these funds help pay for utilities, food, and in some cases, the salaries of priests, pastors and other religious leaders.
Implementing an information security feature into these environments would also prove in effective and non-cost efficient. Each scenario illustrates the assailants target was not intended for financial gain, but rather due to a political or personal vendetta. So, installing a security system designed to protect critical information, such as alarm codes, safe combinations, and other important documentation would have done no good in any of the giving situations.
Interdepartmental dependency is a security feature I consider to be of least importance in any of these situations. Interdepartmental dependencies would be most effective in large businesses and corporations. Within this feature, a hierarchy is needed along with teams of professionals who are educated highly in all area of security. These teams of professionals work in different departments and construct a secure security system platform from multiple levels. Each team works together for the success in establishing one secure high-tech security system, a security system a church, house or small business would not purchase (Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, 2004).
Physical security can offer a closed caption television monitoring system that would have recorded the suspects while the incidents from the shootings and arsons were taking place. Furthermore, in the event there were no witnesses or possible leads for any suspects, a recording could most definitely prove prominent for local, state or federal law enforcement by identifying multiple individual-suspects. Photographs, and video recordings used in court are considered strong evidence against defendants, which makes it is hard to argue a case when the suspect has their identity displayed in the court room committing the crime.
In addition, by installing an alarm system that would be directly connected to the local police department with the capabilities of both manual and automatic signaling, the possibility of preventing injury and even the deaths of a few individuals seem prominent. A button could be installed on the podium where the individual conducting the sermon had the capability of quickly accessing and activating the alarm in the event an emergency transpired.
For the situations where the churches were affected by a bomb attack, an alarm system at the very least would have signaled, contacting the local police and fire department. This in return, provides rapid emergency medical treatment, protection, the apprehension of any suspects and any other services that may be needed during a crisis.
In the event a shooting, arson and a bomb attack occurred at a mall where there is usually large numbers of people, personnel security and different types of physical security I believe would be the most effective components to make use of. Personnel security can offer professional assistance 24 hour a day. Most security agencies require their security officers to be trained and certified in at least First Aid and CPR. Other agencies take it a step higher and may reimburse those officers who participate in higher education. First Responders, certification courses, and even college are some of the benefits security agencies will pay for. Basic training at the very least, allows for one: to evaluate a situation; critically think; and make educated decisions without much hesitation. Moreover security personnel are trained to deal with certain situations which, such as, immediately to contact law enforcement, the fire department and an emergency medical team. Security personnel can identify suspects and are paid to deal with any criminal offences that take place in and on mall property.
Physical security, on the other hand, offers a wide-range of indispensable protection to the mall environment and the individuals within that atmosphere. Closed caption television systems can monitor dangerous situations from a safe distance. This can give security officers and law enforcement the upper hand in a dangerous situation. The use of alarm systems can be triggered automatically or manually during a hostage situation which would save time and alleviate the criminal from being able to make thought out decisions. Sprinkler systems are another type of security feature that will go off during a fire or bomb. Sprinklers can save valuable merchandise and the lives of individuals (Center for the Protection of National Infrastructure, 2008).
The interdepartmental dependencies security for a mall would be effective as it allows a team of individuals to devise a routine that personnel security would be trained to follow in the event a catastrophe as those presented came about. Knowing what to do for a particular situation is crucial as it saves time and time is crucial when saving a life. Information security would offer no benefits during any of the events. Information security’s primary means is to protect any and all data. I believe the protection of individual’s lives in this case is more important than any documentation a mall may encompass.
After reading over each scenario it is fair to say one can never be too prepared for what dangers await us. Though we may be able and capable of creating a security system that will prevent a great deal before anything serious occurs, there is no one security system that is 100% full-proof. References
