In this, the second week of Wimbledon, defending champion Roger Federer won his fourth round match over Jurgen Melzer (16) in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 6-3.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (10) took four sets to defeat Julien Benneteau (32) with scores of 6-1, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Tomas Berdych (12) also took four sets to defeat his opponent Daniel Brands with scores of 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Novak Djokovic, seeded third, won in four sets over Leytton Hewitt (15) with scores of 7-5, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Andy Roddick has been unable to duplicate his one Grand Slam win in 2003 at the U.S. Open with a second trophy. Yen-Hsun Lu, seeded 82nd, from Chinese Taipei, was defeated in five sets with scores of 6-4, 6(3)-7(7), 6(4)-7(7), 7(7)-6(5), 7-9. At the post-game interview, he was noticeably upset and understandably short with the reporters who asked some hard questions.
Robin Soderling (6) who could be a spoiler in this tournament, won over David Ferrer (9) with scores of 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Andy Murray (4) who has not dropped a set in this year’s Wimbledon tournament, won easily over American Sam Querry (18) with scores of 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.
Rafael Nadal (2) won easily over Paul-Henry Mathieu (66) with scores of 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
The Bryan Brothers, Bob and Mike, were able to win their second round doubles match against C Fleming/K Skupski with scores of 6-2, 6-4, 7(7)-6(5).
On the women’s side, Venus Williams (2) won her fourth round match easily over Australian Jarmila Groth, ranked 92, in straight sets with scores of 6-4, 7(7)-6(5).
Marion Bartoli (11) surprisingly lost her fourth round match to Tsvetana Pironkova, seeded 82, with scores of 4-6, 4-6.
Another surprise was third-seeded Jelena Jankovic’s spill early in her match against Vera Zvonareva (21) which injured Jankovic’s back. Zvonareva’s scores were 6-2, 3-0.
Na Li (9) of China was able to win her match in straight sets over Agnieszka Radwanska (7) from Poland with scores of 6-3, 6-2.
Kim Clijsters (8) won her fourth round match over fellow countryman Justine Henin in three sets with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Another surprise in the fourth round – Caroline Wozniacki (4) was defeated by Petra Kvitova, seeded 62, in straight sets with scores of 6-2, 6-0.
Top-seeded Serena Williams had a hard-fought first set against Maria Sharapova (16) with her final scores being 7(11)-6(9), 6-4.
The Women’s Quarterfinal matches will be played on Day 9, Tuesday, June 29, 2010.
