Just before my daughter was married, she and I looked all over for the perfect barrette to fix her hair for her special day. She has hair that falls just below the shoulders, and although it’s thick, it’s also fine and silky. This kind of hair can be a challenge to work with, because it will slip out of many types of hair clips or barrettes.
We found the Scunci Crystal Barrette at Fred Meyer. Scunci is a company that makes many different kinds of products for the hair. We knew as soon as we saw it that it would fit in with her color scheme, we thought it looked “Bridal”, and it had the kind of clip that holds hair securely in place. It just looked elegant, and we both loved it.
Description and Thoughts
The Scunci Crystal Barrette is made of a silver metal, although this looks almost like an antique silver, in that it not at all shiny. The design is open and airy, with what I would call a filigree look. It is average sized for a barrette, about 3″ long, and it has an opal-looking light blue colored stone in the center. The center stone comes in other colors, but her colors were sky blue, so this shade was perfect.
It’s wider in the center, as the blue stone is surrounded on all four sides by clear diamond-like crystal stones. The barrette narrows down to an almost heart shaped swirl toward the end, with one more crystal at the tip.
I make jewelry, and will use only genuine Swarovski crystals in my creations, and the card that this barrette came on says it contains “genuine crystal”. There are different levels and qualities of crystal stones, some have more lead in them than others. While the stones are very pretty and sparkly, I don’t think they are of the Swarovski quality. Another thing that makes me think they aren’t genuine Swarovski is because of the cost, Swarovski’s are very expensive, and this barrette was only $5.00. Regardless, they are crystal stones, and definitely have more sparkle and sophistication than simple rhinestones.
The clip style is what we loved about this Scunci Genuine Silver & Blue Crystal Barrette, as it is designed to hold even thin hair in place. My daughter wore her hair down, but pulled it back from the front, letting it sweep gracefully on the sides, and connecting the two strands in the center back of her head with this barrette. My sister-in-law, who is a beautician, pouffed it up above the barrette just a tad, and she looked beautiful. It wasn’t real visible when her veil was on, but it was during the reception.
The clip has those two little buttons on each side of the front where it snaps in place, when you push these in toward each other, the clip snaps open. When you push it back together, there is a curved metal piece that extends down into the area, forcing a tight hold. It’s hard to explain, but it works wonderfully. I have worn barrettes like this before, and I often find that they can pinch, but this worked great for the occasion and it looked beautiful. It certainly looked more attractive than the $5 we spent on it!
If you need a classy looking barrette for a special occasion, I highly recommend the Scunci Genuine Silver & Blue Crystal Barrette.
