The ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ trailer has been unlocked by 100,000 Facebook fans who friended the ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ Facebook page, and the trailer looks like it was definitely worth the wait (the movie itself has an August 13, 2010 release date). Sure we all know how to make a Michael Cera movie by now, and the ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ trailer is definitely full of doodles, quirky girls, and awkward conversations (check out how to make a Michael Cera movie here), but have we seen Michael Cera kick so much ass yet? I think not. That being said, here’s how to make a Michael Cera movie that brings it on like Donkey Kong:
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 1: Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers
Scott Pilgrim’s sardonic dream chick that works delivering packages at warp speed for Amazon is like a sexier, non-pregnant Juno with ever-changing hair colors and an edgier sense of style (and she looks great in black lingerie). Mary Elizabeth Winstead has starred in movies like ‘Grindhouse’ and ‘Final Destination 3′, but this is definitely her breakout role, as she replaces Ellen Page as the new face of the Hollywood hipster chick. However, I think Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s version of Ramona Flowers will be haunting fanboys’ dreams a lot more (plus, one of her 7 evil exes that Scott must defeat is a girl, and she dated twin brothers…at the same time!)
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 2: Funk-tastic video game-style action sequences complete with pixilated extra lives and campy Batman TV series-style comic book word explosions
In the ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ trailer, words leap to life on the silver screen in an updated version of the campy comic book-style sound effect bubbles from the old Batman TV series. You’ve also got fight sequences perfect for the video game based on the movie, and even some fun video game-style animations (like a pixilated 1-UP). Also look for references to some of our favorite old-school video games (like Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog) throughout the movie when you make a date with your favorite geeky girl on its release date.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 3: Michael Cera + action star moves = the L-word
Speaking of action, taking a perpetual teen geek like Michael Cera and making him a bit of a slacker action star was a pretty brilliant move. As Scott Pilgrim he plays a band member with no aspirations (other than to snag the girl of his dreams), but he can break out the Matrix moves when he needs to for his lady love (that’s the L-word you need to use, Pilgrim).
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 4: Directed by the guy who brought us the hilarious ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’
Need I say more? Edgar Wright’s zombie spoof and killer cop comedy are some of the most refreshing funny films of recent years. So will he conquer the comic book movie genre with ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’? From the looks of the trailer, I’d say yes.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 5: Anna Kendrick as Stacy Pilgrim
I loved Anna Kendrick in ‘Up in the Air’, but it’s going to be a lot of fun to see her in a different kind of movie (and I’m not talking about one that involves lusty vampires). As Scott Pilgrim’s sis, you’ve got to love her advice: “Maybe next time we don’t take the girl with 11 evil ex-boyfriends.” But when advised by Scott that Ramona Flowers only has seven, she replies with, “Oh, that’s not that bad.” (hey, most hipster chicks these days do have a lot more evil sk8ter and meat-hater ex-boyfriends).
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 6: Subtle heart and star notebook-style decorations that girls should love
I’m sorry, I know doodles are one cliché ingredient in the instructions of how to make a Michael Cera movie, but the teen girl in me absolutely loves the little fluttering hearts that appear when Scott and Ramon kiss and the tiny stars that shoot from the drums in the trailer.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Reason to Love the Trailer No. 7: Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers
I absolutely love the casting of the gal that plays one of my new favorite TV characters, April from ‘Parks & Recreation’, as Julie Powers, a friend of Ramona Flowers that tries to keep Scott away from her (she tells him that Ramona is out of his league in the trailer). But I really can’t wait to see some of the theme parties she throws in the future.
Of course there are many more reasons to love the ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ trailer, and it will be great to hear the battle of the bands and to see Scott do battle with Ramona Flowers’ boyfriends (and girlfriend) from hipster hell when the film hits theaters on it’s release date of August 13, 2010. Oh yeah, you can see the trailer’s awesomeness yourself here.
