Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson have never worked together before. So, having Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson together at the MTV Movie Awards 2010 was odd at first. The Iron Man star looked out of place with the others that were presenting Bullock’s MTV generation award. Bradley Cooper starred with her in one of the worst movies of 2009, while Betty White starred with her in one of the most profitable movies of 2009. But, though Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson had no working history, it became clear before long what kind of work they’d be doing on stage.
In the middle of Bullock’s acceptance speech, even she stopped to wonder why Johansson was on-stage with her former co-stars. But the two women do have a mutual friend in Ryan Reynolds, Johansson’s husband and Bullock’s fake husband in The Proposal. The two were nominated for Best Kiss, but naturally lost to Edward and Bella.
Once that Best Kiss loss was brought up, Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson would clearly have to make up for it themselves. MTV award shows have had two famous women kiss before, and Bullock famously locked lips with Meryl Streep at the Critics Choice Awards. So they finally got it out of the way before Bullock left the stage.
The Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson kiss was the capper to a big weekend for the Oscar winner. Since her marriage was destroyed, she had not made any public appearances, but this was going to be her comeback. Everyone already knew that she would be at the MTV Movie Awards 2010 yet, as it turned out, it wasn’t her first public appearance.
To everyone’s surprise, Bullock appeared at the taping of Spike’s Guys Choice Awards the previous night. That show kept it a secret that she won the Troops Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year. It was a pre-taped show, unlike the MTV Movie Awards 2010, so Bullock’s acceptance speech won’t air until June 20 on Spike.
But that show did not have a Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson kiss, even though that was a true guys’ choice. It even upstaged Betty White, which is supposed to be an impossible feat lately.
Heading into the weekend, Bullock’s return to the public eye was already highly anticipated. But, as she has done for over a year now, she defied expectations again. She picked up not one, but two awards, had her usual successful speeches, and gave people a kiss with Scarlett Johansson for good measure. Once more, everything other than Jesse James that she touched and kissed seemed to turn to gold in the end.
