Sandra Bullock, while being nominated and accepting awards, found out in January that she and husband Jesse James had been approved for adoption. And while all eyes were on Sandra Bullock and Jesse James outside their home(s), she and their family kept little Louis (pronounced “lew-ee”) Bardo Bullock safe from prying eyes. Amazingly enough, even during the height of Oscar mania, when Sandra Bullock won the Best Actress Oscar for “The Blind Side,” and the paparazzi whirlwind of the subsequent Jesse James mistress scandal, Sandra Bullock and Jesse James (and family members) kept the news of the adoption from the press.
Apparently there exist a few in Hollywood that can keep a secret.
Feeling it time to tell their story, Sandra Bullock reached out to People magazine and dished on her adoption, her plans for divorce, and her plans to move forward as a single parent while allowing room in her life for Jesse James’ three children (with whom she grew close over the span of their five-year marriage).
According to the editor of People, Larry Hackett, who appeared on NBC’s “Today Show,” Sandra Bullock and Jesse James began the adoption process four years ago, prompted by a suggestion made by Jesse James’ daughter, Sunny. Bullock said that they found out they had been accepted as adoptive parents in January, the heart of awards season in Hollywood, and she didn’t want the baby subjected to “the awards season energy.”
So she brought little Louis (named after the legendary musician Louis Armstrong because Sandra Bullock said that she hear “What A Wonderful World” playing in her head when she first saw him) Bardo home and kept him secreted away from outside eyes.
“I did not want him brought into a world that would not have been too sincere to him as I wanted,” the actress told PEOPLE magazine. “I wanted to be alone with him as long as I could, then we had to tell his story.”
Bullock also told the magazine that she plans on finalizing the adoption process as a single parent and intends on filing divorce papers as well. Her plans are to allow Jesse James into Louis Bardo’s life as well, noting that James’ was a good father to his children. Additionally, she insists that she could not think of not including Jesse James’ three children, whom she has helped raise since their marriage in 2005, in her life, regardless of Jesse James’ actions.
Bullock admitted that she had been taken unawares by the James’ infidelity, that she found out only when she got a phone call about her husband’s alleged adultery. She said that through her shock she packed a bag and got herself and Louis Bardo out of the house “before the vultures descend[ed].”
They descended in mid-March, just barely more than a week after she won her Oscar for “The Blind Side,” brought in by the smell of a dying marriage via In Touch Weekly, a celebrity gossip magazine that landed the expose of Michelle ‘Bombshell’ McGee, an alleged mistress of Jesse James. A week later, stripper Melissa Smith came forward with another story of adultery. Then another came forward, and another.
In the meantime, Sandra Bullock laid low, avoiding the hovering paparazzi, ignoring the calls for interviews and statements, and cancelling several scheduled personal appearances. The media had a field day with all the mistresses. Jesse James publicly apologized to his wife and children (also via People magazine) and checked into a rehab (which he recently exited). It was just in the past week that Bullock allowed herself to be photographed — and she did so without her wedding ring.
Strangely enough, during the height of the scandal and the mistresses revelations, while everyone was trying to get a look at the suddenly reclusive Sandra Bullock, rumors spread that the 45-year-old actress was pregnant with her unfaithful husband’s child. The rumors were found to be unsubstantiated but, somewhat coincidentally, Sandra Bullock was truly “with child” at the time.
People received a statement from Jesse James concerning the present situation. He still has hopes of reconciliation. “I know in my heart,” he wrote, “that I can be the best father possible to my four children and the mate Sandy deserves, and realize that this is an incredible mountain to climb.”
Whether Sandra Bullock and Jesse James reunite is something both will have to consider thoughtfully, although current circumstances seem to point toward a divorce. Regardless, the story now centers not around the Jesse James’ mistresses scandal or the divorce, but around baby Louis Bardo Bullock, the adoption, and the amazing story of how the couple kept the entire process secret for four years, especially for the past several months.
People magazine tells the story of Louis Bardo Bullock and the present state of circumstances of Sandra Bullock in their latest issue, which hits newsstands Friday, April 30.
