During a recent trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, my husband and I stayed at the San Juan Marriot Resort and Stellaris Casino. It is a tall building so many of the rooms really do have a nice view of the ocean. The hotel is located on Ashford Avenue in the Condado Beach section of the city. This area has some resorts and many restaurants and beaches within walking distance which is great if you do not have access to a car while on your vacation.
We spent most of our long weekend right at the resort because we really enjoyed the property. The beach area was beautiful and clean. There was plenty of room for everyone without being crowded. A great feature of the resort is that they provide lounge chairs sun umbrellas for their guests in case the sun gets to be too much for you. The pool is also wonderful. It is very large and has a fun waterslide (even for adults, although it’s only about 4 feet deep). There is also a hot tub and a separate shallow kiddie pool.
We found that early May was a great time to visit because it is off-season for the area. Room prices were cheaper and the resort was not very busy. Our oceanview room cost about $240 per night.
The rooms were clean and spacious. The beds were incredibly comfortable, which is not something I can often say about hotels. Staff was always very friendly and greeted us with a smile. They were eager to help whenever we had a question and were knowledgeable about the area. They did a great job of keeping our room clean and well stocked.
The resort was very conveniently located. Within a block walking distance we found a Starbucks, Haagen Daas, grocery store, and several other restaurants. It is close to Old San Juan, which is an area full of restaurants and night life after a day at the beach. As an avid runner, my husband found the road where the resort is located to be great for running.
We ate most of our meals at the resort. The food was quite good, but overpriced as would be expected from such as place. The breakfast buffet was $20 but had a large selection. There are a couple restaurants on site which are worth trying at least once. We also enjoyed the bar, which had quite a crowd of people and live local music on the weekend nights while we were there. The casino is fun if you are looking to play some slots, but it is nothing greater than what you would find on a cruise ship.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the resort. While the building did look a little dated, the outdoor areas more than made up for it and the staff took wonderful care of us. I would definitely consider staying here again if we were to return to the area.
