Anna Chapman is a 28 year old divorce’ from Russia with a $2million real-estate business in the US–or is she?
According to FBI reports, Anna Chapman is actually a Russian operative working for the Kremlin while living it up on the American Jet-set. Along with 10 other alleged operatives, she was arrested and arraigned on Monday charged with Conspiracy to pass information to the Russian government and Espionage.
When we think of spies, we tend to think of people laying low and keeping an inconspicuous profile, a low key American emigrant life that wouldn’t draw a lot of attention during the daytime and throwing on a gray trench-coat with matching derby at night, carrying a black brief-case handcuffed to their wrists, passing off secrets in a drab rainy alley with gutter smoke rising in the backdrop.
Anna Chapman doesn’t fit this profile at all. Anna Chapman lived the high-life in a $2,100 per month New York apartment, is readily accessible on her Facebook page, and hobnobs with the rich and elite on the New York jet set. There is nothing under-cover about this under-cover beauty, including the sexy photos that she posts of herself on her facebook page. Her motto reads: “If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can live it.”
According to a New York Post article, the FBI has been onto this hot little Jessica Biel look-a-like and her ring of operatives for years. The day of reckoning came for Anna Chapman when an American operative set her up on a sting to pass along a bogus passport to a bogus operative who would actually be working for the Americans and not the Kremlin.
The agent, posing as a handler, told Chapman to pass off the fake passport that was to go to another operative. The spy was supposedly going to ask her: “Haven’t we met in California last Summer?” and her response was to be, “No, I think it was the Hamptons.”
Chapman was supposed to hold a newspaper under her arm to alert the spy that it was her and when the operation was complete, she was supposed to put a stamp on a map to alert the handlers that the mission was complete.
The sting never actually went down, though. Rather than meet the person that Chapman was told would be the operative, she darted off into a Verizon Wireless store to purchase a pre-paid cell phone in a fake name with a phony address.
According to a former Russian spy who now works for the FBI, there could be as many as 50 couples who are actually spies working for the Russian government in the US. The former spy continues that the Kremlin doesn’t have as many operatives today as they did during the Cold War because it is too expensive to train them and the information that they are able to gather can be as easily obtain through other measures without sending people under-cover.
The Kremlin is claiming that this is nothing more than a political maneuver from the Americans who are opposed to President Obama’s goal of warming relations between the Americans and the Russians. People in the Russian government are also clamoring for a tit-for-tat response to the arrests but have refrained from retaliating as of yet.
Anna Chapman is being held without bail.
