Robert Pattinson as Edward Scissorhands is a Hard Decision

by itchy fish

So rumor has it that the classic 1990 Tim Burton directed Johnny Depp Starring “Edward Scissorhands” might be remade with Robert Pattinson as the lead character. While the rumor originated on what is quickly becoming the “GO TO” site for Internet rumors Twitter, so far no sources have come forward to confirm the rumor, or even that a remake is imminent for that matter. Interesting enough though, if the rumor were true Pattinson would arrive at the film a much more recognizable actor that Depp was at the time “Edward Scissorhands” was released twenty years ago. To be honest, it is tough to imagine what the movie could do with a little star power behind it.

However, I would rather the movie stay as it is. The title character experiences so much loneliness and is essentially an outcast, which is a feeling to which so many kids, teens, and adults can relate. Johnny Depp, who has not yet developed his amazing on screen charisma so perfectly, just conveys the feelings and emotions of the pale skinned metal handed Edward ideally. Tim Burton, who has teamed up with Depp since then for numerous projects, shows touches of master he would soon become, as he would go on to create some memorable films. Of course, according to IMDB, Burton had already helmed a little picture in 1989 called Batman which was a success.

The problem with remaking films like “Edward Scissorhands”, is not nostalgic bums like me though, as I would likely buy a ticket to the remake. The problem lies in the commercialism of Hollywood. I just would rather not see Scissorhand toys, posters, trading cards, and lunch boxes. The film is about isolation and tragedy, and how many in the PG-13 crowd are ready for that kind of experience? Plus, the film does not exactly scream “Summer Blockbuster.” There is a reason so many summer movies are sequels, and it has a lot to do with the backing a winner strategy. The fact is unless an actor with proven appeal gets the role, a remake will likely go largely unseen by audiences as a whole. It is just hard to imagine the movie playing well here in the 21st century.

Could Robert Pattinson play another famous Edward? Absolutely. But exactly where is his career heading with the “Twilight Saga” nearing a conclusion. Surely he has enough money and notoriety to just fade away like other teen heart throbs, or will he turn himself into a Johnny Depp? The fact is, it is just too hard to say. Personally, I think the lead in an “Edward Scissorhands” remake would be better handled by an unknown actor, still out there in the wings not yet discovered. Someone who could adequately convey the whole lonely guy image effectively. That concept would be better for the movie, but would likely result in box office suicide. Casting someone with star power, that Pattinson surely has, would help the films chances, but would also increase the budget. Plus, we have the X-Factor that the majority of his fan base have likely not seen the original, as most of them were likely not born yet (now I feel old). Of course, a name and face like Pattinson’s would surely help the much coveted DVD & Blu-Ray sales market. I suppose, I could support a remake with Pattinson, so long as it is NOT in 3D. Though it is all likely up to the bean counters in Hollywood, and we all know they never let us down.
