Rizzoli and Isles debuted to great ratings on TNT. The Rizzoli and Isles series premiere ratings numbers were record-breaking as well, marking the best debut of all time for an advertisement-supported cable show. Rizzoli and Isles had an estimated 7.55 million viewers during its duration on Monday night. That is even higher than anticipated, and sets the bar pretty high for the rest of the 2010 summer season.
Having the series premiere of a show during the summer is always a risk, but Rizzoli and Isles ended up rewarding its producers right out of the gate. It is always tougher to bring in audiences during the second week, though, so we will have to wait and see if all of the original viewers enjoyed the new show enough to keep tuning in week after week.
Rizzoli and Isles will follow The Closer on Monday nights this summer, giving TNT a really tough lineup when it comes to Monday nights. Going up against The Bachelorette over on ABC is no easy task either, but TNT has apparently been up to the task already. The sixth season premiere of The Closer aired on Monday as well, drawing in 7.7 million viewers to mark an up-tick in viewership compared to what they drew last season. That is pretty impressive for TNT, which is now drawing in ratings numbers that they have never had for an original, scripted show like this.
Emmy attention for The Closer is paying off, and the advertising for Rizzoli and Isles must have hit its demographic perfectly to get them to tune in for the series premiere.
Rizzoli and Isles gives TNT another female-driven show, once again proving that the network really knows how to write strong characters for its actresses. This time around, they have a show that stars a detective named Jane Rizzoli, and a medical examiner named Maura Isles (where the title obviously comes from). Sasha Alexander plays Isles, and has been seen as a supporting character in quite a few shows and films. She is probably very recognizable for her time as Agent Caitlin Todd on NCIS.
Angie Harmon plays Rizzoli, who has been in quite a few roles, including a guest star in Chuck recently. She is best known as Abbie Carmichael from Law & Order, though. Also in the cast is Lorraine Bracco from The Sopranos.
The early ratings are very good news for TNT, and they have to have high hopes going forward about what Rizzoli and Isles can bring the network in summer ratings. Rizzoli and Isles shows every Monday night this summer at 10 p.m. on TNT.
