A couple nights ago, I decided to cook brats for dinner. Since I ended up making them inside (I couldn’t tell if it was going to rain or not outside), I made all the side dishes too.
One of those dishes was Pasta Roni Shells and White Cheddar.
My parents actually bought this for us a couple weeks ago. Well, actually, it was for our kids since both of them like shells and cheese and they figured there wasn’t much of a difference between the white cheddar and ordinary yellow (though my oldest would disagree with that).
When I first saw this product, I thought it would be something different from the things we normally make with dinner. And, I was familiar enough with the brand to know I could expect quality. But, while I won’t say the shells and white cheddar weren’t very good. I will say they proved to be somewhat of a disappointment.
I had originally intended on making these a few days earlier with some pork chops I was making on the grill. However, when I read the back of the box, I learned the shells and cheddar were going to take too long to make. Even in the microwave, I could expect about 15-20 minutes of prep time and, with the pork chops already on the grill; that was going to be too long (the meat would have been cold by the time this was done).
It was because of this longer cook time that I had to plan ahead with dinner and start this item first. It wasn’t that big of a deal but I just never liked side dishes that take more work than the main entrée.
Those who have ever watched me cook know I rarely follow instructions to the letter and would rather estimate amounts than measure. Well, this time around, I measured everything exactly as the box described it and even cooked the pasta for as long as it said and let it sit for the amount that was instructed. Despite all of this, the cheese sauce was thin and watery. And, even after sitting for a while longer, it did not thicken the way it was supposed to.
The Pasta Roni Shells and White Cheddar didn’t have that bad of a taste to it, so I will give it points for that. But, I quickly learned this product also lacked quantity. There was barely enough for two adults and two young children and that was only because I purposely took an extra small serving of them. It was a pretty big box so I honestly was expecting more.
While not the worse side dish I have ever tried, I can honestly say this is a product that just didn’t justify the cost and, as a result, I don’t intend on buying it in the future.
