There are always candles in my house … there were always candles in my apartment … I had candles in my dorm room … I think I’ve always had candles any time I’ve had a place to put them.
Throughout the years I’ve had the opportunity to purchase and receive many, many different makes and models, sizes and scents of candles. It’s often what people give me as gifts, and each year brings new scents and beloved favorites into my home.
Yankee Candle has been a company I have purchased from and received gifts from for a long time now. They are fairly easy to find at outlets, Yankee Candle stores, and Hallmarks. Their glass jars and colorful labels are eye catching and make them a nice gift giving gift.
Yankee Candle jars come in 3 main sizes – Small (3.7 oz), Medium (14.5 oz) and Large (22 oz). I say if you can afford it go for the biggest size – it gives the biggest pool of wax and therefore the biggest “throw” (the amount of scent the wax gives off when warmed). The prices range from $12 to $22, though often you can catch a good sale.
Rarely do I have a “dud” from Yankee Candle, though not all scents are my favorite. The jars are made in class with black YANKEE CANDLE lettering. Below that is the scent name and a related picture of that scent (apples for apple scents, a cup of coffee for coffee scents, etc). Each scent has it’s own unique picture. Some of the candle wax is colored to match the scent (the lilac is purple, apple is red).
Yankee Candle also sells this scent in wax votives and tarts. Votives are short, stand-alone candles with a wick. Tarts are fluted wax scents that heat up in a burner and release their scent (no wicks).
One of my current favorite Yankee Candles is scented in Creme Brulee. Creme Brulee is a sugary dessert that, to me, smells like a cross between caramel and vanilla with light spices.
From the company:
“Pure temptation … heavenly vanilla cream custard drizzled with honey, brown sugar and nutmeg. Experience authentic, long-lasting true-to-life fragrance made by our master perfumers with pure, natural extracts and enjoy the superior burn performance of candles crafted by master chandlers (candlemakers) who take extraordinary pride in their work. You can count on the renowned Yankee Candle reputation for exceptional fragrance quality and consistency from start to finish. And it’s all presented in a Comfortable signature style that’s an American tradition. Also a perfect gift for any occasion.”
I find the Yankee Candle in Creme Brulee to be very versatile in my house. The wax is white and therefore blends in with any room decor (whereas some of the candles, like the purple, sort of stand out in other rooms). The glass is thick and durable, making the candle somewhat heavy. The edges are rounded and safe. The cap is made out of glass as well, and keeps a secure lid on the candle when not in use. These candles have one central wick that needs to be trimmed before use. As the candle burns in burns down the center of the jar. It can leave some black soot on the rim of the glass, especially if the wick is not carefully trimmed.
The scent of Creme Brulee easily fills any room in my house. It is not an overpowering scent and does not take over the room, though is noticeable. I can burn it in any room of the house, but I personally enjoy having it next to the computer in the family room. The scent does not irritate anyone, including pets and small children.
If I could change anything about these candles I do wish they were soy instead of paraffin wax. Soy is better for the environment and burns evenly, though often scents don’t work as good in soy and I haven’t found a jar candle with soy wax to burn as well as the paraffin ones. Also I would prefer if the wick did not soot because I worry about my kids breathing that in. I do often get around that issue though by not burning the wick – instead I place the jarred candle on a warming plate and let the wax heat up and scent the rooms that way.
Overall I have found the Creme Brulee scent of Yankee Candles to be among my very favorite scents this company makes … treat someone to a Yankee Candle today!
