The Baldknobbers first began entertaining in Branson back in 1959. They were the first show and they paved the way for Branson to become the entertainment and recreation capital – and all around great place – that it is today.
The name “baldknobbers” comes from the Branson area’s regional history, depicted in the Harold Bell Wright novel, “The Shepherd of the Hills.” The historical baldknobbers were mostly former northern sympathizers who maintained their own kind of vigilante governance for some time after the end of the Civil War.
The Baldknobbers Jamboree Show took the name “baldknobbers’ only because it sounds humorous and you’ll see for yourself that the Baldknobbers is a very funny comedy combined with top notch modern and traditional country, rock-a-billy and blue-grass music.
In June 2010 I saw this show for only the second time and, again, I was impressed with the high quality of the entertainment they provide. Everything from the theater itself, the lighting, the costumes, the singing, the dancing and the on-stage personalities total up to one excellent show in a town that has a lot of competition.
Even if you don’t really like country music – in fact, I don’t – there is something to like in how well done this show is. Plus, they do a great job of combining their singing and dancing with their comedians
They alternate between the two to timed perfection. I was never bored or restless for a moment throughout the show – even during the slow country songs. They didn’t last long enough for me to be bored. Besides, there was always something else for me to focus on like the beauty of the stage or the performers’ costumes.
This alternation between a serious performance and comedians has come to typify the platform for shows in Branson. Since The Baldknobbers have been doing in longer than anybody, it’s no wonder that they have perfected it!
Still, the comedians were the best part of the show for me. There are three of them and they are much funnier than they look on the brochure. This is a great place to laugh, enjoy, forget your troubles and have a great time.
This show ran about 2 hours and 20 minutes with about 15 to 20 minutes for intermission. They have a little gift shop full of typical Branson glitz. You’ll want to arrive, at least, half an hour early to enjoy the pre-show. It starts at around 7:30.
