This year hasn’t been a good one for movies, if you ask me. Very little of what’s come out has been original or even good, and though there are some fantastic exceptions (Inception, obviously, and even How to Train Your Dragon was pretty great), they are generally outliers in a year full of mediocrity in the film industry.
And then comes Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World. I wasn’t sure by the trailers how this would turn out just because it seems like the type of film that would be all style, no substance. I figured it’d be a fun watch, but not incredibly memorable, but I was proven so incredibly wrong.
Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is an absolutely awesome movie. Not only is it fantastically original, but it’s so utterly hilarious every single time it tries to be that I would dare say not a single joke falls flat. It takes its parody of video games to just about every level that you think it would, and even throws in a few other random parodies and completely nonsensical moments in there just to make you laugh. And it always works.
Know, though, that this movie is really designed for the 12-30 kind of crowd. The main focus is on parodying video games in as flashy a way as possible, and though the entire film is hilarious, I don’t think anybody much older will tolerate its complete randomness quite as much. Because the movie is a complete farce, and it will sometimes throw in scenes that don’t make any sense at all just because they’re funny or intense, and that’s kind of how a video game would do it too.
I feel like my descriptions of the movie aren’t doing it justice though. The entire time I was watching the film I was absolutely marveling at the editing. The shots move at such a quick, break-neck pace and the entire movie refuses to stand still for more than a few seconds. This hyper camera work makes the movie so much more exciting because you’re constantly being tossed from one scene to another, and the pace is just insanely fast, but completely works in context of the movie. And once again, the movie isn’t just an action movie. It utilizes every single chance it gets to be funny, and almost all of these moments become laugh out loud hilarious. This is, easily, the funniest movie of the year so far. Movies like The Other Guys and Get Him to the Greek or Dinner For Shmucks do not even come close to how funny Scott Pilgrim was.
I usually spend an extensive amount of time in my reviews on negative aspects of the movie also, regardless of whether I liked it or not, but I really can’t find any negatives to this movie. The CGI was amazing, the action was fantastic, music was great, acting was great, pacing was phenomenal, the story was well done, and the movie was constantly funny and fully realized its concept. I guess if there were one thing I would say against it it was that the ending sequence went on a couple minutes too long, but otherwise, if you’ve already seen Inception, this will be the next best thing you could see in theaters right now. Don’t hesitate, go.
