The Passing is the first Left 4 Dead 2 downloadable content (DLC). Available through the Xbox Live marketplace, it costs 560 Microsoft points. It is available for free if you own the PC version of the game. Included in the DLC is a new campaign, some surprises, and a new zombie type. I recently finished the Passing campaign. If you love killing zombies, the Left 4 Dead 2 DLC is a great add-on.
New feature in Left 4 Dead 2 The Passing
The most innovative feature in the DLC is the blog. In the main menu, you can access the blog. The post explains that there will be a new “Mutation” mode every week. The Mutation is basically a change up of a regular mode’s rules. This week’s mutation mixes Realism with Versus. Players are also asked to vote on their favorite mutations. Mutation mode is playable on all Left 4 Dead 2 maps, not just the Passing.
Left 4 Dead 2 The Passing Gameplay
The Passing takes place in between the Dead Center and Dark Carnival campaigns from Left 4 Dead 2. The DLC is broken up into three campaigns, Riverbank, Underground, and Port. It is during the Port where the new survivors run into the original Left 4 Dead cast. They are not playable characters.
The Passing features new zombies, achievements, and weapons. The survivor or “fallen” zombies drop health kits and other useful items when killed. They also run when attacked, making acquiring their items harder. New achievements include playing 6 mutations and completing all levels in the new campaign. Weapons include a golf club and a M60 machine gun that can’t be used once the ammo is depleted.
Left 4 Dead 2 The Passing Replay Value
The creation of the Mutation mode greatly expands the replay value of not only The Passing, but all of Left 4 Dead 2. Every week players can try out a new take on the old modes and vote for their favorite mutation. The full game is made for multiple play throughs and the DLC is no different.
While I wished the original cast played a bigger role in the DLC, it’s still a solid expansion to the full game. I’m most impressed by the blog and the Mutation mode announcement. It’s exciting to be able to vote for favorite characters and modes. Mutation will keep the game fresh and add to the replay value for a long time to come.
