Right before Christmas last year, Amazon.com offered a free 3 month trial to use Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime gives you free 2 day shipping on most items from Amazon.com, without a minimum purchase amount, and it allows you to upgrade to overnight shipping for $3.99. Typically this service is $79 a year, so I was thrilled with the opportunity to try it free right before Christmas. For the $79, you can share your membership with 5 household members, which works great if you can split the cost with a roommate.
Anxious to avoid the holiday shopping crowds, I hopped online to see how the program works. Normally on Amazon.com, if you spend $25 or more you are eligible for free Super Saver Shipping, but this can take up to a week to get delivered. With Prime, there is no minimum, and the shipping is always 2 days. Most the items sold on Amazon.com are covered by Prime, the few that aren’t are those items sold on the webpage by a 3rd party seller. But even then, some 3rd party sellers have Amazon fulfill their orders, which means that some used products are available with free Prime shipping.
I decided to try out my new Prime membership with a DVD, just under $20. I ordered it on Tuesday, got free Prime shipping, and UPS delivered it on Thursday. This got me hooker, no need to deal with traffic or lines, yet I could still get all my shopping done, and probably save money. I ordered quite a few things before Christmas using Prime, a couple DVDs, a water bottle, some video games, including a used game, and some books. All of these things came in 2 days, and I didn’t pay a dime in shipping. I also found Prime helpful for last minute shopping. On December 22nd, I was online finishing up my gifts, and knowing that they would still be delivered by Christmas without any additional cost.
The next real test for Prime came a few weeks after Christmas. My Xbox 360 broke so I went to Amazon.com to find a deal. I finally settled on a new Elite bundle at 6:30 on a Thursday night. Not wanting to wait till the following week for it to arrive, I upgraded to overnight shipping for an extra $3.99. The next day I was playing my new Xbox 360. I could hardly believe that for just $3.99 they could get me an Xbox 360 the following day even though I didn’t order until almost 7 o’clock at night the day before.
I highly recommend Amazon Prime. While $79 a year may seem high, it comes out to under $7 a month. The service and value are amazing, plus it allows you to save tons of time by not having to run out and buy little things here and there, just order on Amazon.com and they will get to you in 2 days.
