When I came across Nasoya Silken Style Creations Dark Chocolate I wasn’t exactly sure what it was. I have bought tofu in the past and Nasoya Silken Style Creations was in the same tofu type container. I wasn’t sure if it was a block of chocolate flavored tofu or what. It was chocolate and vegan so I bought it to try it out.
Not sure what to expect I cut it open with a knife, right along the sides, like I do tofu containers. With the first cut a dark chocolate thin pudding like liquid came bleeding out of the hole. It was not a block of tofu inside but a pudding like substance. There was no recipe on the container. It just directs you to there website. At the time that sounded like to much trouble since I was having a massive sweet craving and no time to turn on the computer and search. Thankfully the package did say it can be eaten straight from the package too. I opted for that.
I put some in a bowl, noticing how thin it was. Pudding consistency it was not. I ended up eating something more like a chocolate soup. Like I said I was having a massive sweet craving so yes I ate it as a soup.
It does taste like a chocolate pudding, one that didn’t firm up. It is very sweet. This is coming from someone with a huge sweet tooth.
The next day I tried it with fruit. I dipped strawberries and bananas in it and, wow, it was good. It has a nice and creamy chocolate flavor that is only slightly over powered by the sweetness. You cannot tell at all that tofu is the main ingredient.
My only complaint is the fact that it has more sugar than I like, 18 grams per serving. They could have easily replaced or at least halved it with stevia. Other than that the ingredients are pretty basic, like they should be: Silken Tofu (Water, Whole Soybeans, Magnesium Chloride), Cane Juice (dried), Cocoa (processed with alkali), Rice Starch, Natural Flavors, Salt.
After all was gone I did decide to check out the website and see what I could have done with the product. It turns out the recipe for the pie on the container was pretty easy. It doesn’t call for much more ingredients than the product. The site even has a recipe to make ice cream with the product.
Even though my sweet tooth took over and didn’t allow me the patients to try to go searching for a full recipe I plan to buy this again and make the recipe I found on the site. Nasoya Silken Style Creations Dark Recipe Starters also comes in strawberry and vanilla flavors. I can’t wait to try those too.
