After getting a babysitter, my significant other and I decided to go out to a local restaurant for his birthday. Since it was a holiday weekend and we knew traffic could be bad, we decided on a location about 10 minutes from our home that neither of us had eaten at before. Shenanigan’s Sports Bar and Restaurant is located in Lake Harmony, PA on Lake Shore Drive. The restaurant boasts having live bands, Karaoke nights and a dance club. The night we went, a large sign greeted us when we pulled in stating it was Karaoke night starting at 9:30 pm. We had arrived early so we could eat before enjoying the entertainment of other people singing.
We were seated promptly and a waitress came over to take our drink orders. She knew at least 10 of the beers on tap without having to leave and ask the bartender which was good. My significant other ordered a Dos Equis and I ordered a Coor’s Light both beers the bar had on tap. The waitress left to get our drinks, leaving us with our menus to be perused.
Shenanigan’s menu offers everything from wings to filet mignon depending upon your mouth’s palate the night you go. Price’s ranged from $6 for a salad to $30 for Filet Mignon. Before we could peruse the entire menu our waitress was back with our drinks. In fact, she was only gone for about 2 minutes. It was nice to have our drinks so quickly but we didn’t have enough time to figure out what we wanted to eat. We asked for a few more minutes to look at the menus.
We decided on the Shenanigan’s Combo Platter for me and a Mushroom Swiss Burger for him. The Shenanigan’s Combo Platter was priced at $10.50 and was a combo of wings, potato skins and mozzarella sticks with dipping sauces; marinara, blue cheese and sour cream. I asked the waitress to switch out the blue cheese for ranch dressing, as I refuse to eat a cheese where I can see the mold (sorry blue cheese fans!). The Mushroom Swiss Burger costs approximately $9.50 and came with all the fixings; lettuce, tomato, onions and a pickle and sour cream and onion chips or it was optional to switch the chips for french fries for another $1.50. He opted for fries.
We did not have to wait long for our orders and got to enjoy the atmosphere a little bit while we did wait. Shenanigan’s is a very nice restaurant with seating on the first level, a bar upstairs and a dance club in the back. People started pouring in and we thought it was because Karaoke would begin in a little while but then all the stations of the several tvs were changed to a hockey game. Not too surprising since Shenanigan’s is a sports bar. However, we noticed most of the people piling in were wearing the jerseys of their favorite teams.
Our food arrived and looked pretty good. Looks can be deceiving though. My significant other had to pick all the onions off of his burger because he is allergic. He couldn’t remember if he had asked the waitress to leave off the onions and neither could I so we let it go. Then he picked up his burger to take a bite and the first thing he noticed was the grease underneath the bun from the burger. This was not very appealing to him but he figured that burgers can get greasy so he took a bite. He said that was all he could taste was the grease and very little of the burger. I picked up my wings, ready to dive in, and dipped it into the sauce which was supposed to be ranch dressing or blue cheese. Taking a huge bite, I was highly disappointed to taste hot wing dipped in mayonnaise. That’s right. Mayonnaise. Who in the world serves mayonnaise with wings or any of the other foods on the combo platter? I don’t know if it was just a freak mistake or if it was done on purpose but I must have made an odd face. I asked my other half to taste it. He did and confirmed it was mayonnaise.
At this point our waitress had disappeared until our food was almost gone, except for most of his burger and all of my wings. When she came back I asked for the ranch dressing. She apologized and got it fairly quickly. However, at that point we were highly disappointed in our experience with Shenanigan’s. After I got the dressing, our waitress disappeared again. We actually stopped a bus boy to find out when Karaoke began. It turned out that it wouldn’t start until after the hockey game somewhere between 10:30 and 11pm. At that point, we decided to leave and Shenanigan’s got a 2 and half star rating for my rating criteria.
We had a better time once we headed home and grabbed a few bottles of wine to enjoy down at the beach in the development where we live. It turned out to be a nice night after all enjoying each others company on a moonlit night.
