If you are brunette and have ever attempted to use an at home hair coloring kit to achieve red hair, you know how difficult it can be. One kit might make you look like a copper penny, another might make your hair look more purple than red, and another might not show up at all. Finding the right kit has always been a game of “color roulette”, until now.
Garnier has answered the prayers of naturally dark haired ladies like me that want that red head look. Garnier Nutrisse has just released a line of Nourishing Color Crème at home hair color kits that promise to give naturally dark haired ladies the ability to achieve red hair, not just a red tint that shows up when you’re outside like all the other kits do (if they leave you with anything at all). Currently there are three shades to choose from; R3 Light Intense Auburn (which I used), R2 Medium Intense Auburn, and R1 Dark Intense Auburn.
I have to admit that since I have been disappointed in the past, I wasn’t too sure I would achieve the look I wanted much less the color shown on the box, so I went in to trying the product a bit skeptical. I followed the directions and prepared the dye as the instructions suggested and began to color. As those of you that have used at home color kits know, when you first apply the dye after mixing, it comes out as a white cream. This did not bother me because I expected it. After a few minutes I noticed the cream beginning to change color; a very scary fluorescent orange! This color change terrified me and I began to contemplate washing it all out because I was starting to look like I had gone wig shopping in Bozo’s closet. However, I continued coloring because I knew I had a box of black hair dye under the counter just in case. Once I was finished coloring all of my hair, I began my 25 minute wait. I tried not to look in the mirror as I waited because of the whole scary color thing. I wanted to make sure I gave the dye a chance.
Once my 25 minutes were up, I walked over to the bathroom and saw that my hair had turned a dark burgundy red. It was not what I expected but it was still very pretty and I was certainly pleased it didn’t stay the fluorescent orange. After I rinsed it out, the red was even more pronounced. I loved it. This was the first at home hair dye kit that actually gave me the red I was looking for and it kept getting better. After my first hair shampoo, more of the burgundy washed out which left me with an even more vibrant red.
For the first time in my life, my naturally dark hair has become the sexy red I always wanted. I am so in love with this color that I am going to buy a few extra boxes to keep at home because it is a kit that I can trust to give me what I am looking for. My only suggestion is to buy two boxes for your first at home dye job. My hair is shoulder length and I noticed I did not saturate my hair with the dye as well as I should have. With this color, you must saturate every strand because missed areas are very noticeable. Additionally, your hair will need to be colored frequently if want to keep your hair red. This hue washes out quickly so maintaining it will be necessary. Using a shampoo that deposits or enhances red color would be beneficial to use if this is a shade you want to keep.
If red hair is something you want and you haven’t been able to achieve it thanks to having dark hair, Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Crème for Naturally Dark Hair is the way to go. Thank you Garnier for making red hair easy to do at home!
