The suspense of Pretty Little Liars is building even further and the questions just keep on coming. This week’s Pretty Little Liars episode was called The Homecoming Hangover and that was, once again, a perfect title. The girls were left to deal with the events from Homecoming and while it seemed some of the answers had been provided, everything twisted and things went right back to confusing and a little scary. Let’s take a look at what happened in Pretty Little Liars episode The Homecoming Hangover.
We were left last week with a blackout as Emily tripped while being chased by Toby. As the episode began this week, Aria, Hanna and Spencer are running around the school looking for Emily. They find her phone outside the Science lab and as they look inside they see the room has been damaged from the fight Emily had with Toby, and blood on the floor. The scene cuts to Toby arriving at the hospital with Emily in the back of his car.
The good news is, Emily has no permanent damage. Plus, just before the shot enters Emily’s bedroom, it shows the car from the Homecoming raffle which Emily apparently won.
The next time Emily is seen, she is in her bedroom with Aria and Spencer who are discussing what they found in Toby’s file. Emily is surprised to hear that Toby and Jenna were romantically involved, and that Ali saw them together before she threw the stink bomb that resulted in Jenna’s blindness. Aria and Spencer conclude that Toby had enough motive to want all of them dead. Emily is not convinced though, and wonders why he didn’t kill her too when he had the chance.
I suppose the reasoning for that is fairly obvious. Emily’s friends knew she was with Toby and it would have been safe to assume that he had killed her. Also, I am not even a little bit convinced that he is evil now. Odd, yes. Evil, no.
At the front of Emily’s house, a policeman is telling Emily’s mother that Emily’s Homecoming date dropped her at the hospital and drove away. Her mum argues that Ben wouldn’t do that – which shows how little she knows about her daughter. Not only did she have no idea who Emily went to the dance with, she didn’t know that Emily split up with her boyfriend after he tried to molest her in the locker room! When the policeman reveals who Emily really went to the dance with, her mother bluffed that she knew all along. The policeman then says that Toby went home, dropped off his car and disappeared on his motorbike.
Back in Emily’s room, Emily tells Aria and Spencer that she lied about how she got hurt because she didn’t want to tell the truth until she talked to her friends about it. They tell her she should admit what really happened.
Hanna shows up and Emily’s mum lets her in while the policeman is still asking to talk to Emily. Her mother refuses, insisting that whatever Emily told him is the truth.
When Hanna gets to Emily’s room she is flustered because when she tried to put the file back from where she stole it, there were police there who knew it had been taken. She freaks because it is now the third time she has been caught stealing and knows she will be in a lot of trouble if anyone finds out is was her. Spencer and Aria are both called away but Hanna stays with Emily.
Emily asks Hanna why she thought she wanted to take Maya to the dance. After slight hesitation, Hanna reveals that A sent her a photo of Emily and Maya kissing. Emily explains that she thinks she knows what she wants but is scared to admit it in case it’s the wrong choice. Hanna proves just how valuable a friend she really is by saying that it doesn’t matter who she dates because her friends love her no matter what. Emily is more afraid of what her parents will say as they are very conservative.
Later, as Emily is sleeping she is woken by a dog barking in her face. Jenna’s dog. Jenna is standing in the doorway with Emily’s mum who says Jenna baked her some cookies. Jenna rather oddly announces that they taste good with milk then asks Emily’s mum if she has milk in a strange tone. Reminded me a bit of young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter! I know I say this every week, but that girl scares the living daylights out of me.
Again, I digress.
While Emily’s mum goes to get milk, Jenna sits down on Emily’s bed and says she thinks Emily is the only one who knows where Toby is because Emily is one of the few people he trusted. Jenna explains that Toby is “troubled” and doesn’t know what he might do. She is worried because the police are looking for his file and that it might fall into the wrong hands. Emily says she thought Jenna would be relieved the files was gone and Jenna deduces that Emily has read the contents. Emily promises that they won’t tell but Jenna says she owes it to her to let her have it.
The creepiest part of this scene was Jenna announcing that secrets have a way of getting out, like what Ali told her when she visited her in the hospital. If that isn’t a clue that Jenna is behind the text messages, I am not really sure where it’s going.
As soon as Jenna leaves, Emily tries to call Hanna but she is busy at a photoshoot (more on that later). Emily’s mum comes into Emily’s room with hot drinks and takes her phone away from her so they can talk. Emily’s mum confronts her daughter about going to the dance with Toby and tells her that people will get the wrong idea about her if she is seen with him. Emily says she thought Toby was just misunderstood but her mother argues that he is not and asks why he left her at the hospital. Emily says she needs some sleep and her mum says she needs to start being honest with herself.
She will regret saying that later.
The two sit in the room together in an uneasy silence until the doorbell rings and Emily is finally left alone. She grabs her phone and calls Spencer but unfortunately, it is missed as Spencer, Hanna and Aria have gone on a mission in the woods. Hanna is still flipping about how much trouble she will be in if anyone knows she took the file so she decides to burn it in the woods. Aria and Spencer try to make her stop and they end up having a fight about it, resulting in Aria getting annoyed and flinging the file into the river. The pages scatter and float into a pile of junk. Aria then gets a text from Emily saying not to destroy the file.
The next day, Emily is back at school and is confronted by Jenna. Emily tells her the file is gone, and Jenna says – in the creepy Tom Riddle way – “I hope you’re not lying to me.”
Emily later runs into Maya and tells her that she is ready to start being honest with herself – which will no doubt distress her mother greatly when she finds out! Maya is worried that Emily will change her mind again but Emily says she wants to give things a try.
After school, Emily drives home to see a truck in the Cavanaugh driveway with a smashed up motorcycle on the back. There are police everywhere and Jenna is sitting on the front step, sobbing.
Emily gathers her girls together at her house and discuss whether Toby is dead or not. Then they get a text from A. It thanks them for getting Toby out of the way, leaving them all wondering what will happen next and once again, who is sending the messages.
Spencer
Spencer continues to prove that she has more to her than first met the eye when she goes to the tennis club to seek out Alex. He is working in the kitchen and even though Spencer is told by another worker to leave because she is violating health codes, she stands her ground and asks Alex for another chance. Alex responds positively but his agreement comes with a clause. She has to let him plan the whole evening, to prove that she isn’t a complete control freak. Although apprehensive, Spencer accepts.
The next day at school, Spencer gets a text from Alex saying that he has to cancel the date because of work but thinks he is lying because the tennis club is closed on Mondays. She later goes to the club to check whether Alex was lying and finds him in the kitchen preparing for a breakfast “thing” that is happening the following morning. Spencer is caught in the kitchen by Alex’s boss and Alex covers by saying she is there to help him. When the boss leaves, Alex is surprised when Spencer dons a hair net and starts helping him to get the food ready.
After running out of supplies, Spencer heads out to the storage area and follows instructions from Alex to point her in the right direction. As she opens the door to one of the cupboards, she finds it plastered in photos of tennis club members with offensive drawings on them. She is shocked to find one of herself, with horns drawn onto her head. Upset that she is viewed that way, she walks out but later returns while Alex is making himself something to eat. Alex is having a boogie to the radio and pulls Spencer in to dance with him. Unsurprisingly, they kiss and….possibly more.
Aria
Aria is still pining for Mr Fitz and leaves a message on his answering machine asking him to call her. Her mother, Ella comes into Aria’s room holding a box of flowers for her. As the two are talking, Aria’s brother Mike comes in and says that Byron is taking him to the game and asks if Ella wants to go too. Ella says no because she and Byron are barely talking. Ella leaves Aria to open her flowers and she is surprised to find they are from Sean to thank her for keeping him company at the dance. The look on her face was absolutely priceless!
At school, Aria looks for Mr Fitz but finds a substitute teacher in the classroom instead.
While she is putting her things in her locker, Sean catches up to her and asks if she got the flowers. Aria tells him she did and not to do it again because she is Hanna’s best friend and he was doing it out of spite. Sean admits that is true and Aria sternly reminds him that Hanna loves him and he should stop giving her a hard time.
After school, Aria drops by Mr Fitz’s apartment and uses the key under the doormat to get in. He isn’t there but while she is looking around she hears an answer phone message about a job interview.
There was a lot of drama between Aria’s parents in this episode and it was all a little bit too boring to write about. It works in the show it just doesn’t make interesting reading. It resulted in Ella moving out.
Hanna
Things for Hanna are getting interesting. She arrives at school to meet Lucas so he can take photos of her and Sean as Homecoming King and Queen. Lucas is desperately smitten with Hanna and although it would kill her reputation to admit it, it seems she is beginning to like him too. When Sean arrives he is clearly still miffed with Hanna and eager to get the shoot over. Lucas makes an effort to bring Hanna and Sean closer together by putting them in poses that has them touching. Hanna apologises to Sean for leaving him at Homecoming but he is not interested. After being posed one time too many, Sean flips out and yells at Hanna and Lucas then walks out.
The next day at school, Hanna meets Lucas to choose which Homecoming photo to use for the yearbook and they end up spending some time messing around and watching YouTube videos, revealing Hanna’s inner geek! When their hands accidentally touch, Lucas admits that Hanna and her friends used to scare him. He said Ali was evil and Hanna told him that she had a softer side.
Hmm.
At home, Hanna is browsing more silly YouTube videos when Sean comes by to tell her he forgives her. She tries to show him the videos but he thinks they are lame.
Cliffhanger
The Homecoming Hangover’s cliffhanger ending this week was both obvious and yet still spooky. As the closing credits rolled, we saw Toby’s file floating down the river into the junk pile and being gathered up by gloved hands.
I have no idea what is going to happen next. I can’t even pull together a decent theory. All I have is that Toby is not nearly as messed up as we are led to believe and he probably isn’t dead either. As for “A”, well my money is still on Jenna, obvious as it seems.
Oh, and Hanna will most likely end up with Lucas too but that isn’t nearly as interesting as the other stuff!
I am again itching for next week to see what surprises are to come!
