Not many people take the time or spend the money to mulch their vegetable garden. It is however a great idea that is full of benefits. When you use the proper type of mulch it will act a water reserve for the times throughout the growing that rain is not so plentiful. Mulching your garden can also act as a natural insect repellant. And aesthetically it is a beautiful top dressing to showcase your lush and happy plants. So many gardens are planted and left with only the soil around them to encourage growth but soil alone will make your plants work harder to achieve their optimal growth potential. This takes away from the best possible yield when it comes time to harvest.
No matter where you live you will have times throughout the growing season you will see some sort of drought. Unless of course you live in tropical rain forest. We have no environments like that here the United States. In these times your garden is at the mercy of your ability to water it yourself. Irrigation system are not cheap and unless you are running from your own personal well water is not cheap either. Mulch acts as a sponge and will slowly release the water to plants when they need it. And when it is tilled into the soil it will give your plants root system a better oxygen source.
Cedar mulch is little more expensive at first but its benefits are worth it. When it comes to insect and pest control we want to use the least amount of chemicals as possible. This is called the IPM ( integrated pest management ). IPM starts with managing your plants environment to ward off pest and insects from the start. Cedar is a natural repellant and it hold the most amount of water. Logically it comes from an evergreen tree and evergreen trees are able to grow year round due their ability to hold water and nutrients. You will save your money on insect control so it is easy to justify spending a little bit more on the cedar mulch.
Cedar mulch in encouraged more than other types for many beneficial reasons. One is that it is the most pleasing type of mulch for beauty. It is red or rusty in color. It will hold its color longer than any other mulch on the market and when you buy it know you are not getting recycled diseases that can hide in the cheaper types of mulches. Cedar will compliment any type of garden or landscape design. It also discourages weeds. You will still have weeds but buy adding the cedar mulch you cut that amount in half by tilling the mulch into the soil as well as top dressing the plants after they are planted. You will want to ensure that your plants are protected and provided for both below and above the soil. Your plants will be much healthier and the foods you harvest from them are pesticide free.
