Random Act of Kindness #1: When you walk past someone look at them and smile, especially if they are a stranger. You may not know how much a simple smile will mean to that person.
Random Act of Kindness #2: Pick up trash and litter that you see, even if it is not in your yard. When you are picking up the mysterious wrappers and bottles from your yard, walk down the street and clean up your neighbors’ yards too. Make sure you clean the yard of the neighbor you suspect is littering as this will earn you some karma points.
Random Act of Kindness #3: Hold the door for the person behind you. Gender does not matter in this act of kindness. A woman holding the door for a man is just as nice as a man holding the door for a woman. If you are the recipient of this act of kindness make sure to thank the person.
Random Act of Kindness #4: Send a letter to someone you love. Emails do not count for this random act of kindness. You must get out the note cards and stamps. Write to the person you love and let them know how much they mean to you.
Random Act of Kindness #5: Do extra chores or do a chore that no one in your family likes to do. It will be a nice surprise to your family to find that you have done some of their assigned housework. Do not do this too often though or you risk the extra chores or yucky chore becoming assigned to you.
Random Act of Kindness #6: Tip your waiter or waitress more than 20%. If you have ever worked as a waiter or waitress you may do this already. You do not have to do this regularly, but when you do I bet it will be unexpected and appreciated.
Random Act of Kindness #7: When you ask someone how they are doing, listen to what they have to say. Too often, “How are you?” is a passing phrase where an answer is not only not expected but seen as rude if it is not, “Fine, and yourself?” Ask someone how they are and care about their answer.
Random Act of Kindness #8: Reconnect with an old friend. In the age of the Internet it should not be too hard to find someone you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Seek them out and let them know that you miss them. You may never know how much this means to them. Do not be discouraged if they do not respond with joy. Understand if they are busy and do not have time to catch up.
Random Act of Kindness #9: Tell a parent that they are a good mom or dad. When I was pregnant a coworker told me I would be a good mother. Over five years later that kind comment stays with me.
Random Act of Kindness #10: Offer to help when you see someone struggling with something. Whether it is a short person trying to reach something on a tall shelf, or a person by the side of the road with a flat tire, stop and offer help. If you cannot help, ask if they would like you to get someone who can help.
