As a writer, I am always on the lookout for new publishers that are willing to accept unsolicited manuscripts. Tongue in Cheek Press, otherwise known as TIC Press, is an up and coming publishing house that holds great promise for unpublished and published authors.
Keeping up with the information / electronic age, TIC Press welcomes unsolicited manuscripts of at least 40,000 words from both published and unpublished authors. They began in 2009 as a sub publisher for other well-known presses but have broken free from the chains that bound them to the long and arduous processes of hard copy publishing to produce professional and completely marketed eBooks for authors.
Although their website states that they prefer a query letter, it is not a necessary step in the acceptance process. Follow their submission guidelines and you could have your answer in as little as 4 weeks; some publishers take 6 months or more to get back with promising authors. They also have technical formatting guidelines to follow as well for submissions that if followed, will help to ensure being accepted.
Not everyone is a publishing guru, so they have offered to give up the name of their technical formatter to those that wish to inquire. I wrote to the powers that be at TIC Press and requested the information. Within an hour of my inquiry, I had the contact information for their mystery formatter. The agency they use is in no way affiliated with TIC Press other than performing finishing-touch formatting for their manuscripts. Most impressive about this formatter was their rates.
I had checked around the web for rates for technical formatting services and the industry average is $25 per hour. Unfortunately, I am a struggling artist and cannot afford to pay that type of fee, but the agency that TIC Press uses was much more reasonable! The technical formatter has asked that I not distribute their information as they are in the process of hiring and training more people. They did assure me though, that all inquiries that are generated from the TIC Press as well as other well-known places on the web will be given quick and courteous attention.
TIC Press assures their promising authors that using this formatter is not a necessary step in getting your manuscript accepted, but having a correctly technically formatted manuscript could increase your chances of acceptance regardless of who you use.
Upon speaking with a TIC Press representative, they have assured me that submitting a manuscript that is free from spelling and grammar errors increases the chances of acceptance. In the company representative’s words, “When we receive a manuscript that has common spelling and grammar errors, we usually place it in the end of the line or reject it all together. If we receive a manuscript that has no spelling or grammar errors, we take a look at it and move it on to step number two; content review.”
This agency just finished a manuscript for me and my manuscript has been taken to step two with TIC Press. Comparing my original doc with the one that this agency produced, well, let’s just say, rejection would have been the only step with my own ms.
I believe that TIC Press is going to make a huge name for themselves in the publishing world. They accept on all types of genres, both fiction and non-fiction. Check them out and make a submission. At the very least you will have a quick answer and avoid the long waits as with so many other publishers.
