Traveling for any amount of time often leaves you with the dilemma of carrying all your valuables everywhere you go or leaving some with your luggage. While hotels often provide a safe that you can use while out of your room, it’s not always the best option and campers do not have this luxury. Consider purchasing one of the many unusual diversion safes on the market before you take your next trip.
The most disturbing of the group is by far the “Brief Safe” Fake Secret Compartment Dirty Underwear. Yes, it is a pair of men’s whitey tighties that look soiled. If you can get past the disgusting factor, this product has a secret compartment, (yes, exactly where you would imagine it to be), with a Velcro closure. Shove your extra cash, credit cards, jewelry or other small items into the pouch and leave where ever you want; would be robbers will probably pass on a pair of dirty underwear. I can see backpackers, overseas travelers and long distance bike riders successfully deterring a crook with this item. Women traveling alone may not choose this product, although it would still work, but there are many other options.
Cutting Edge Pillow Safe
Of all the diversion safes, this one has the largest storage area and is the most practical on vacation. The pillow is functional and offers a 5-inch x 4-inch inner safe, large enough for passports, cash, credit cards and jewelry. Personally, I would cover it with another pillow case for added safety. The damask fabric might stick out on a camping trip as being out of place and the idea is to blend in with your other items.
Crafted to look exactly like a can of Aqua Net, this can has a hidden storage compartment located in the twist off bottom. Set it right on the counter top or in your bag and no one would know it wasn’t the real deal. Not recommended for bald men.
Barbasol Shaving Cream Can Safe
This works under the same principle, the can has a twist off bottom that serves as the safe. It is designed to look and feel just like the real deal.
Dr. Pepper Can Safe
Hide your valuables in plain sight. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, a burglar spends less than 10 minutes in a victim’s home. A pop can can be placed in the midst of a 6-pack and discreetly hide your cash. The can is weighted so that it feels full. This idea is extended to several other food-safe items, such as a 7-Up can, Dasani water bottle and Del Monte Fruit cans. The Dasani water bottle has it’s compartment behind the label; the top and bottom are filled with water. It has the smallest storage area of them all, but it will do the job, unless the thief is thirsty that is.
Like the fake rock to hold a spare set of keys, the book safe seems like an obvious choice for a criminal to look. But if you have a large book collection, it will blend right in. The personal safe can hold important items while you are away from home. Protect your valuables from home invaders or unscrupulous cleaning people. The book includes real pages to help with the ruse. One tip, if you do not live alone, it might be wise to let your loved ones in on the whereabouts of this item, just in case they decide to clean out the bookcase for a garage sale or charity truck.
Liquid Wrench and Puncture Seal safes
These are my personal favorites. They look and feels like the real deal. Weighted with a foam interior, if it is picked up and shaken it sounds like it is full. Toss it in the truck of your car or in your backpack for a safe spot to store small valuables while traveling, or set in your garage at home.
Southwest Specialty products, the manufacturer of all the can items, also offers ingenious candle safes, clock safes and lots more cleaning supply cabinet safes that will keep your valuables in plain view but out of sight.
To really throw a home invader off, purchase a few of the safes, or one safe and a few of the actual product to place together. A case of Del Monte fruit cans in the cupboard does not scream, “Valuables,” and will most likely not get a second glance.
