I like to keep a bottle of air freshener in my half-bathroom on the first floor for guests. Of course I want scents that are pleasing while freshening the air from offensive odors. Some air fresheners are so heavily scented but all they do is make the air smell flowery yet still offensive. Some aromas are offensive in and of themselves!
Price and Packaging
I needed some more air freshener, and I am always willing to try new products. While I was at the local dollar store I decided to try Air Wick’s Odor Stop Island Paradise scented air freshener for just $1.00 plus tax.
The air freshener comes in the fairly standard recyclable steel container and is 8 ounces. The bottle displays an island scene with the ocean, sand, and part of a plant (which looks like a palm tree perhaps), with a peach colored spray button top. On the front of the container is the word “Air Wick” at the top in green lettering. Below their brand name are the words “Odor Stop” in blue (except the “o” is a red octagon shape with a line through it such as you might see for a no smoking sign), and it states that it is make “with baking soda.” Below that it says it eliminates odors, and then, finally, the scent’s name is displayed in a peachy color. The label is very attractive and calming, and that’s what I think this product wants to help convey: a soothing sense of relaxation.
As with most air freshener products, you are supposed to shake this one before spraying in a well-ventilated area and keep away from extreme temperatures, as it is flammable. Air Wick is a product from Reckitt Benckiser, Inc. based in Parsipanny, New Jersey. This brand offers a number of scents of air fresheners and fragrancing options for consumers.
Unlike many air fresheners I have tried in the past, there is not really any description of the scent anywhere on the label; it’s only described as “leaving a fresh and clean scent.”
This scent is okay, but it’s not one of my favorites. A small pump of the button releases a thick but somewhat pleasing and sweet aroma. The Air Wick Odor Stop Island Paradise, in my opinion, has too heavy of an aroma, which can be overwhelming with only a small amount used. My boyfriend tends to spray too much as it is, so this product scent really lingers a long period of time. It does smell fresh, but it’s a bit too much and even smells a little artificial to me, if that makes sense.
The aroma brings to mind the word “overwhelming” for me. It’s just too much. It reminds me of women and men who douse themselves in too much perfume or cologne and it stinks up the whole room, where you just want to escape! Honestly, the scent isn’t too bad, but it’s just too heavy. I don’t know if it was made this way because of the baking soda used in the product or something, but it’s just too thick of an aroma for my taste.
Does it Eliminate Odors?
Does this product simply perfume the air or does it really help remove harsh odors? This is the question I feel is the most important when evaluating an air freshener. Some simply add fragrance to the air without really removing offensive smells. This product really does seem to freshen the air and get rid of the bad smells that one can imagine would result in a bathroom. However, as I stated before, it’s just too thick of a scent and doesn’t bring the word “fresh” to my mind, rather “perfume!”
I do think this product performs well if you can handle the heavy scent. A little goes a very long way where this product is concerned. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s simply not my preference. I would be willing to try another Air Wick freshener, but I don’t think I would buy this specific scent variety again. My only fear is that all the fresheners of this variety from this company will also have the same heavy scent as this one, but, for only a dollar, I can risk trying them!
