While the President’s Poll numbers are sagging, while oil continues to stream into the Gulf of Mexico, and while Tea Party movements spring up all across the land, President Obama took a decidedly cautious step towards appeasing the masses by dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in American Veterans. According to the Christian Science Monitor, the President’s radio address was all about this issue. President Obama would be wise to keep the families of soldiers on his good side if he plans to make a run for a second term.
Obama Streamlines PTDS Afflicted Vets: What It Is: According to the Christian Science Monitor report, President Obama and “the VA will streamline the process for soldiers to seek help and file claims for what he called the “signature injuries of today’s wars,” PTSD and traumatic brain injury (TBI).”For years, many veterans with PTSD who have tried to seek benefits – veterans of today’s wars and earlier wars – have often found themselves stymied,” Obama said. “They’ve been required to produce evidence proving that a specific event caused their PTSD. And that practice has kept the vast majority of those with PTSD who served in non-combat roles, but who still waged war, from getting the care they need.” This seems to be a good tactic but also one strewn with potential places for the dishonest and lazy to hide.
Obama Streamlines PTSD Afflicted Vets: My Experience: PTSD is a tough illness to define; it’s sort of like sadness. Or apathy. Or anger. People all deal with problems in different ways; some view trauma as simply a part of war. My best friend growing up had a dad who was very much affected by his experiences in Vietnam; he was (and probably always will be) damaged by that. you can’t take those experiences back; they just become a part of who you are. My grandfather’s an elderly WWII Vet who associates the loss of his wife with his war experiences. Experiences which he still sees vividly 60 years later. I suffer from Traumatic Brain Injury so I know that damage to your brain isn’t something which just heals like a flesh wound. So it goes for PTSD.
Obama Streamlines PTSD Afflicted Vets: Final Word: The Obama tactic of making the process of government easier for everyone sounds to me like a lot of his rabbit/hat magic that he tried to pull with healthcare. He’s trying to make what is (governmental bureaucracy) into something it’s not (streamlined) – the two are incompatible. It also sounds to me like a calculated move that’s more about his polling than anything else. When President Obama says, “…you don’t have to engage in a firefight to endure the trauma of war,” that sounds more self-referential than maybe even he realizes. President Obama also said “…I don’t think our troops on the battlefield should have to take notes to keep for a claims application.”
Okay Mr. President. And we agree with you. But have you made any notations about how angry and upset so many Americas on both sides of the aisle are at you?
