The Preakness Stakes 2010 results would be historic either way. First, the 2010 Preakness Stakes results could put Super Saver on the elite list of horses who won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. But if not, they could ensure that the Triple Crown was out of reach for a 33’rd straight year. Super Saver came in favored to do the first, although he had a co-favorite that was hungry after a disappointing Kentucky Derby. As it turned out, the Preakness Stakes 2010 results were what many expected the Kentucky Derby to be like at first, with Lookin at Lucky getting lucky.
At the Derby, Lookin at Lucky got a bad draw and a bad start, while Calvin Borel worked his rail magic on Super Saver. This time around, Lookin at Lucky got the more favorable No. 7 post position, with Super Saver right next to him at No. 8. The Derby winner had been favored all week, but Lookin at Lucky became the co-favorite at 2-1 right before post time.
The Preakness Stakes 2010 results reflected that this last minute change was smart, just as Super Saver validated the late confidence in him before the Derby. Once the bell went off, Super Saver looked to start out well, jumping out among the early leaders. Yet it turned out he went off too early, and never found the rail or any other favorable position.
Lookin at Lucky made his charge late, while Super Saver was fading fast. Early surprise leader Big Dude gave way to Lookin at Lucky, as fans realized that the Preakness Stakes 2010 results would not keep their Triple Crown hopes alive.
Super Saver slumped to eighth, over 11 lengths back. However, the Preakness Stakes 2010 results were still down-to-the-wire, as Lookin at Lucky had to hold off Big Dude, Jackson Bend and Yawanna Twist. He finally beat Big Dude and Jackson Bend by 3/4’th of a length, doing what he couldn’t do at the Derby.
With the Preakness Stakes 2010 results, Bob Baffert claimed yet another win at Pimlico, his fifth overall. He did so after putting Martin Garcia in as the new jockey, six days before the race. The change was more than enough to overcome Borel and the other 10 jockeys, and keep the Triple Crown drought alive.
Of course, this makes the Belmont Stakes a little less meaningful in three weeks. But it is still the most grueling leg of the Triple Crown, although Lookin at Lucky won’t get to find out. Baffert announced he will not run in the Belmont, and will not have a rubber match with Super Saver.
The Preakness Stakes 2010 results were the last for Lookin at Lucky in this Triple Crown season – yet they will help balance out the first leg and then some.
