The 2010 Preakness Stakes this Saturday at Pimlico Racetrack in Laurel, Maryland could be a torrid pace compared to last weeks Kentucky Derby. The best horses will be coming from the center of the starting gate in the 12 horse field with Kentucky Derby champ, Super Saver starting in the eight spot and Lookin at Lucky starting from the seven post position.
Super Saver will have plenty of strong competition as he goes for the second leg of the Triple Crown in the Preakness Stakes. Challengers that could ruin Super Saver and jockey Calvin Borel’s dreams will be Lookin at Lucky at 4-1, Paddy O’ Prado at 3-1, Jackson Bend at 20-1 and Aikenite at 18-1. Aikenite drew the rail at the post position draw but that may not be as much of a hindrance as many believe.
The Preakness Stakes is a shorter distance than the Kentucky Derby and should be a wild dash for the first turn as the thoroughbreds are let loose on the Pimlico track. Super Saver the favorite at 2-1, with Calvin Borel aboard, will undoubtedly head straight for the rail out of the gate and Lookin at Lucky (third favorite at 4-1) will follow right behind. What happens from that point forward will involve heart and tenacity of the two jockeys. Paddy O’ Prado at 3-1 is the second favorite according to the opening line released by Pimlico but may not factor in the end result.
Jackson Bend will look to redeem himself in the Preakness Stakes.
Jackson Bend with veteran jockey Mike Smith aboard will break from the number six hole and could latch on to a fast breaking Super Saver, following Super Saver to the rail. If the break happens anything like this Jackson Bend and Smith will relish the fast dry Pimlico course and could challenge Super Saver in the final stretch. Jackson Bend at 20-1 is the best bet to win the Preakness Stakes.
Aikenite breaking form the first post position has a chance to win Preakness Stakes.
Many experts are writing off Aikenite, who is breaking out of the first position. They are ignoring the fact that Borel and Super Saver will clear horses and break for the rail as soon as he breaks from the number one spot. Aikenite and jockey Javier Castellano can then follow Super Saver to the stretch run. If Aikenite can produce enough kick in the final stretch he is a solid second choice at 18-1 to win the Preakness Stakes.
Super Saver at 5-2 can not be ignored to win the Preakness Stakes.
Super Saver will immediately break from the number eight hole, clear horses and be on the rail heading into the first turn. The question will be can Super Saver and Calvin Borel be on the lead heading down the back stretch? If Super Saver has the lead down the front stretch Borel will be tough to overtake. Super Saver is a must bet as a cover bet at 5-2.
