Potential Treatment for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s from Mutant Gum Disease

by itchyfish

Researchers report new findings about mutant strain of bacteria that may hold the key for possible Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s treatments among others. The findings will be reported at the 110th meeting of the American Society of Microbiology.

Autophagy the main component of cellular endurance and resistance against invading organisms. It is how the cell breaks down and converts material into amino acids that is reusable. Neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s among others are linked to the build up of polypeptides with neurons. Recent evidence conjuncts that may be if affected cells could break down the plaque that is built up it could dramatically heighten the chances for recovery. Being able to stimulate autophhagy in the cells, it could result in expansive help for treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

Ann Progulske-Fox on of the researchers from the University Florida College of Dentistry, stated that even though it is not thoroughly understood how these diseases start, knowledge of the fact that proteins clump together and form plaque build up in afflicted patients neurons. If it is possible to aim the cells own strength to break down the waste products against plaque, then they can be kept from developing and possibly halt the development of these diseases among others.

In past studies the researchers showed the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis was able to start autophagy when presented to a human cell line, proposing the bacterium deposited some unknown substance that started the process.

Researcher Progulske-Fox went on to state learning how P. gingivalis starts autophagy in present cells could guide the way to innovated therapeutics for treatments of neurodegenerative disorders along with
the normal understanding of autophagic pathway. Mutant studies will expedite this knowledge and advancement of new possible approaches to treatments of many diseases.

There are some alternative therapies to help with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Here are a few of them.

Diet and Nutrition Therapy

Proper diet and nutrition is essential for everyone to lead a healthy lifestyle. It really becomes imperative as we get older. Diet therapy will be aimed at the particular disease and is always geared to having a healthy lifestyle.
