For the past several months, I have been eating several different brands and types of chocolate – flavored rice cereals. Two of the brands of cocoa – flavored cold cereal that I eat on a regular basis are Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal and Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dyno-Bites Cereal. These two cereals resemble each other closely in a multitude of ways, yet there is a wide disparity between their retail prices.
While both of these varieties of chocolate – rice cereal are delicious when they are swimming in a bowl of milk, each of these products also tastes great when eaten dry, straight from the box. I am so impressed with the flavor, texture and overall high quality of these two brands of cereal that I have decided to write an article which compares and examines the two items. Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is a product comparison review of Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal and Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dyno-Bites Cereal.
Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dyno-Bites Cereal is available in 12.5 ounce boxes, 25.50 ounce bags, a 42 ounce “Super Size” bag and other sizes.
Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal is sold in 11 ounce boxes and 15 ounce boxes.
Both of these brands of chocolate – rice cereal state that a serving size is 3/4 cup. Personally, I usually consume at least one cup of cereal in each serving that I eat.
The textures of Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal and Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dyno-Bites Cereal are very similar. Each of these cocoa – flavored rice cereals features a soft, yet crisp texture that produces a nice mouth – feel, whether they are eaten dry, straight – from – the – box, or sailing in a sea of milk. Maybe it’s my imagination, but the Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal seems to be just a little firmer than the Malt-O-Meal Cocoa Dyno-Bites Cereal. I think that the texture of both of these cocoa – flavored rice cereals makes them fun to eat.

The regular retail price charged for one 11 ounce box of Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal at Hartford, Connecticut area supermarkets and pharmacies is approximately $2.99. Quite often however, this cereal is on sale at these same supermarkets and pharmacies. Recently, the sale price that I paid for one 11 ounce box of Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal at my local CVS Pharmacy was $1.88 and I thought that the price was very fair.
The only price that I have seen charged for 12.5 ounce boxes of Malt – O – Meal Cocoa Dyno – Bites Cereal is $1. That is the sale price that Hartford, Connecticut area CVS Pharmacies periodically charge for this cereal. I am unsure of the regular price charged for this cereal at supermarkets, but I am certain that it is less than the price charged for the Post cereal, because Malt – O – Meal cereals are known to be very inexpensive.
Taste / Flavor
When it comes to taste, or flavor, these two brands of chocolate – rice cereal are quite similar. Both brands feature pleasant – tasting crisped rice, but the cocoa flavor in the two cereals slightly differs. To me, the Post Cocoa Pebbles offer a somewhat more pronounced chocolate flavor than the Malt – O – Meal cereal, but they both still feature excellent chocolate flavors.
Funny thing, I prefer the flavor of the Post Cocoa Pebbles more when I eat the cereal dry, as a snack, but prefer the flavor of the Malt – O – Meal Cocoa Dyno – Bites Cereal when the cereal is combined in a bowl with cold milk. At any rate, both of these chocolatey cereals are quite tasty and I personally think that the bargain – priced Malt – O – Meal cereal is just as tasty as the higher – priced Post variety.
Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal is packaged in fairly heavy duty cardboard boxes. The boxes feature attractive and appealing illustrations and design and they also list all pertinent ingredient and nutritional information.
Malt – O – Meal Cocoa Dyno – Bites Cereal is also packaged in various – sized cardboard boxes, but it is also packaged in plastic tube – like bags. Interestingly, some retail stores seem to carry only boxes of Malt – O – Meal cereals, while others seem to only stock and sell Malt – O – Meal cereals in the plastic bags.
Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal and Malt – O – Meal Cocoa Dyno – Bites Cereal are very similar products in many ways. Their appearance, texture and to a large extent, flavor are not identical, but they are very close. The big disparity between these two cold cereals however, is with their retail prices. The Malt – O – Meal cereal normally sells for less than half the price of the Post variety, yet the two cereals are extremely similar.
Although I really enjoy eating both of these cereals and actually slightly prefer the Post Cocoa Pebbles Cereal, I would recommend both of these brands. Logically and economically speaking though, the very inexpensive retail price of the Malt – O – Meal Cocoa Dyno – Bites Cereal makes it such an outstanding bargain that I would have to ultimately state that it is the much more reasonably – priced product of the two brands of cereal being reviewed here.
