What does a pool noodle cost? A buck or two? That’s a bargain for kids who enjoy playing with them in the pool. And, that’s a real deal for someone who would like to have some new decor pieces around the house. Using the pool noodles you can make elegant bedroom decor, cute things for a child’s room and even useful decor pieces for the bathroom. You can easily make decor for a child’s room, the kitchen or other areas of the house by using the inexpensive pool noodles.
Take a pool noodle and twist it into a circle. Use hot glue or other adhesive to glue the ends together. Set the circle on a piece of cardboard and draw around it. Cut the cardboard a tad smaller than the circle then glue the circle to the pool noodle. You’ve just made a basket that can sit in the bathroom and hold rolled towels or can even be placed in a child’s room to hold stuffed animals. Use it in the bathroom to hold brushes, combs, curling irons and more. Fill the basket with artificial flowers and greenery to make a nice table centerpiece.
There are many variations you can do with the baskets. Cut a portion of the noodle off and make a smaller basket. Stack two noodles to make a huge floor basket. Stack small noodle circles to make one type of basket; stack large noodle circles to make another. Use the same color of noodles as you stack them or use different colors to create another look. Stack two or more noodles together to make a barrel basket that can hold anything from umbrellas to kitchen utensils. Don’t like the look of the pool noodle decor? Cover the noodle with fabric or felt before creating the baskets.
Make a unique pillow by first covering three or more noodles with fabric. Cut the fabric so that it’s longer on the ends than the noodle itself. Roll the pool noodle in the material then glue or stitch the seam shut. Use ribbon or cord to tie the ends shut. Gather three of these noodles together and tie them with ribbon or cord. Stack them so that two pillows are side-by-side with the third on top. Tie them together in the middle and close to each end. These gathered noodles serve as one long pillow that makes unique bed decor and a head prop when watching tv. You’ll also be surprised to see how beautiful these pillows look when you simply set them on a bookcase headboard or even a mirror-less dresser.
Your dog or cat will love a new pet bed made from pool noodles. Twist a noodle into a circle shape and cut a cardboard circle to fit. Glue the circle to the noodle then glue on an additional noodle circle. Use a serrated knife to cut an opening where your pet can enter and exit. Make a pillow for the bottom, purchase one, or just fold up an old blanket and set it inside the pet bed. (Note: cats like to claw at the noodle so keep that in mind when considering this type of pet bed for your cat).
Make a scratching post for your cat by cutting a section of pool noodle to the size you want the post to be. Purchase a block of wood and a large-diameter wooden dowel rod at a craft store and glue the two together. Position the rod in the center of the wooden block. Slip the noodle over the dowel and the scratching post is ready.
Any teen – boy or girl – would love a pool noodle message center. There are many different ways to make it so you can choose the one that’s right for his or her room. Use glue strips to instantly hang the lightweight noodle on most any wall. Use decorative pins and tacks to hold notes, reminders, photos and more. Or, glue magnets on, here and there, to hold metallic objects like refrigerator magnets or small metal picture frames. Use a nail to push holes in the noodle, add a little glue, then glue in the nails, hooks or other objects. These can hold jewelry, hair accessories, scarves and much more. You can even purchase peel-and-stick hooks that are quick and can hold many different things.
Make a different message center by starting with a large piece of cork sheeting from a craft store or even a cheap, dry-erase board. Cut the noodle in four sections (you might need to use more than one noodle depending upon how large you want the message center to be). Use glue strips to stick the noodles to the wall, all the way around the cork board or dry-erase board. The cork as well as the noodle can hold messages, photos and more. The dry-erase board allows you a way to write messages. These message boards are good for a child’s room or even the kitchen.
Having a party by the pool on a night when it’s a little to chilly to swim? Cut a pool noodle into sections and use them as candle floaters to light up the pool. Set a votive candle on each floater and let them go. It’s a cute way to use the pool as part of the decor for the party. The floaters can be dressed up by encircling each one with a ring of artificial flowers.
It’s fun to use pool noodles to make new things because they’re so colorful and very inexpensive. Since it’s easy to glue plastic, wood, cloth and other things to the noodles you can embellish each finished piece the way you want. While no one’s looking run and grab one of the noodles out of the pool! In just a few minutes you can make it into something new and fun for your house, your kids, your pet or yourself!
