Feeding hummingbirds nectar for speedy energy is something that can be concocted by dissolving water and sugar. Red cake dye is sometimes added for color to catch the birds attention although the dye may not be very good them. “Ready Made” nectar is another option that can be purchased while other nectars need water to finish the product.
Sugar is good for the hummingbird to obtain energy but there may be a way to give hummingbirds extended energy and a dose of health every time they take a drink. It may or may not contain sugar, but you can hang up a second sugar water feeder beside it.
It’s a feeder filled with pomegranate juice. The pomegranate craze has been about how good pomegranates are for health and many birds are reaping the health rewards of fallen pomegranates that have split open and expelled seed. Grackles, sparrows, blue jays, robins and cardinals are a few of the birds that will eat pomegranate seed.
The natural color of pomegranate juice, usually reddish in color, should attract hummingbirds but a drop or two of red cake dye could be added if necessary. A healthier replacement for the red cake dye is to substitute berry juice such as raspberry and blackberry.
Berry juice would make a healthy treat for hummingbirds alone and because berry juice has natural red or black color the tiny attractive fast flying birds should notice it. Pomegranate or berry juice can be added to sugar water to give the birds fast energy and a health dose in a feeding. Juices should be able to boost the birds’ immune system to keep it from getting sick as easy.
With all hummingbird feeders, even those containing only juice, should be set up to keep ants out. This might include making a moat with water around the feeder or oiling a pole with cooking oil. Juice of avocados should never be fed.
The safety of hummingbirds while they are feeding is vital to their return. If the humming birds are chased away by larger birds or are threatened by cats they’ll likely leave and feed somewhere else. The heat of the sun can be a problem and not having enough branches nearby to land on as they sit for a short break in between feedings.
To make it comfortable and safe for a hummingbird the feeder can be placed away from other feeding areas for larger birds and in a viewing area where they can be watched in case of a cat. Hang the feeder in the shade where there are plentiful branches for the birds to sit.
