With our hyper-intensified news cycle and always-clacking cable news networks, we are more connected today than ever before. So, it comes as no surprise that politicians are getting the same heat once reserved for superstar musicians, high-paid athletes, and the Hollywood elite. Still, just because their stresses are the same does not mean that politicians are somehow immune from the same scrutiny that celebrities go through; when the veneer cracks and their response to these pressures gets verbal or even physical, they need to be held up to the same standard as everyone else.
Rob Etheridge: What Happened:
In a clever little game of “get-the-politician,” Congressman Bob Etheridge was approached by two “faceless” students who were grilling the representative about whether or not he supported the agenda of President Obama. In the camera angles of the shots, you never can see these people’s faces, and they never identify themselves. So, Etheridge does what any red-white-and-blue-blooded American would do when they are being videotaped by strangers; he tries to get them to identify themselves. In the carefully edited video clip, Etheridge also slaps the camera out of the hands of one of the individuals, and grabs the wrist and neck of the other.
Rob Etheridge & Russell Crowe:
Does anyone remember in 2005 when Russell Crowe threw a telephone at a front desk clerk of a hotel because his long distance call to his wife wouldn’t go through? Crowe avoided jail time, but had to pay court costs and plead guilty to third-degree assault. Also, the hot-headed Aussie had to stay clean for one year and avoid jail lest he lose his right to work in the United States.
Rob Etheridge & Sean Penn:
Actor Sean Penn also lost it at a paparazzi photographer just recently, as these guys were all taking his picture and the actor advanced on them, focused in on one, and kicked him. Penn was ordered to do 300 hours of community service, 36 hours of work with a therapist, and 36 months probation to avoid jail time in this instance.
Rob Etheridge Conclusion:
So, I think that this old man congressman should have to do something similar. But, I think that these two anonymous students need to come out into the light of day and reveal themselves for who they really are. Who are these two goons working for? What is their angle? How did this mystery tape wind up in the hands of online news aggregator Andrew Brietbart? More questions need to be answered, and media need to identify themselves, or else they could get slapped around like these two guys. I’m not making excuses for anonymous buffoons; I’m just saying.
