Before planning a vacation to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you might want to look at some different locations to visit and stay at.
Helen, Georgia is a nice tourist spot in Northeast Georgia that might be the perfect vacation getaway you and your family are looking for. If you are into waterfalls, shopping, fishing, visiting bed and breakfasts, or going to unique museums, Helen might just be the place for you.
At first glance you will think you have stepped into an alpine village. Walk the cobblestone roads as you shop for a variety of items such as clothing, gifts, and home décor as you stroll though the Alpine Village Shoppes. This shopping area is located on Main Street just north of the post office and is open daily to visitors.
You can also stop and take pictures in front of the uniquely structured and decorated shops as you browse through each one.
For lunch, why not stop in at Helen’s Country Café where you can munch on homemade southern style biscuits and daily specials until 2 p.m. If you are an early bird, step in for breakfast. They open at 7 A.M.
If you want a little adventure in your day, you might want to stop into the Live Tarantula Gallery. You and your children will love learning about these little scary creatures. There are 30 adults on exhibit and you can learn about each and every one during your visit.
If tarantulas aren’t your thing, you could always stop by the Helen Art Gallery and History Museum. There is free parking, though it is limited. The Gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 12-4. You can learn about Helen’s history. There are also classes open for handmade pottery. You need to check the site for more updated details and times for classes, however.
For dinner stop on by to Bigg Daddy’s American Tavern. They pride themselves on being the only micro-brewery in the area. They offer sandwiches, pizzas, a children’s menu and a variety of other items available. They also feature live music.
So, you’ve went shopping, ate homemade biscuits and saw some creepy crawlers. Now, where do you stay for the night?
There are several options for Bed and Breakfasts, but most of us with families will opt to stay at a hotel chain we are familiar with.
No problem there. Best Western and Country Inn and Suites have rooms close by with reasonable rates. You can even visit the sites and book online which makes things easy and fast.
After spending a day or two in the village you might want to head to Anna Ruby Falls right outside of Helen for an amazing day of hiking and viewing a magnificent waterfall. Then head back to Helen to visit another restaurant or finish your shopping.
Any way you choose to do it, or whatever you want to do in Helen, Georgia, you should plan on staying at least 2 days in the area. This makes it a perfect weekend getaway before heading to other parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains on your vacation.
