Flying can be an expensive form of travel. There are many more associated costs than simply the ticket. Some individuals fail to think of all the possible costs and end up breaking the bank for an ill-budgeted vacation attempt. You may forget to incorporate the price of rental equipment or tips to the staff, but one thing I’m sure wasn’t in your budget was paying to use the on plane restroom. The DailyWildCat.com refers to it as the “Pee Fee”, and they could not be more accurate. The popular European airline Ryanair plans to charge one Euro, which equates to approximately $1.40 in U.S. currency to use the bathroom on the plane. They would accomplish this task by putting a coin slot in the bathroom, much like coin operated laundry.
According to the Wildcat.arizona.edu this is not the first time this European airline has put an unnecessary price tag on flying related items. They currently charge 30 Euros to check a bad, 10 Euros to use a debit/credit card to purchase the ticket(s), 60 Euros to check sports equipment or sound equipment, 15 Euros for each kilogram of what they consider to be excess baggage, 50 Euros to change a flight and 100 Euros to change the designated name that appears on the ticket. I suppose it is no surprise that there is now a fee to use the restroom. The real surprise would be what will they put a price tag on next.
This fee will cause a decrease in customer loyalty to this airline in my opinion. Several airlines place charges on extra baggage and convenience fees when paying with a debit or credit card. An airline that makes you pay to use the restroom is just outrageous. What if you have a child that just can’t seem to hold it? I remember as a child I never had to go to the bathroom until after we left the house, so we stopped several miles down the road. There are also various reasons that urination would be increased, such as pregnancy or bladder infections. Will those individuals really be charged for things they have a difficult time controlling? One thing I could not find information on was whether the length of the flight will void the price to use the restroom. If you’re on a flight half way around the world I’m sure there will be a few necessary potty breaks. These will not be excessive but just necessary for healthy individuals.
We already have to pay for the ticket, transportation to the airport, rented vehicles, food, housing, activities, and now to use the restroom. I wonder what we will be charged for next.
